I just bought a used 2020 TRD Off-Road and noticed what I perceive as the brakes sticking when coming to a full stop. This only seems to happen in the last few feet or so of stopping, so I am going pretty slow. I am very light on the brake pedal, and don't press on it hard. I am new to Tacomas and pick ups for that matter. I previously drove a 2005 Subaru Outback.

So my question.... is this normal for Tacomas or pickups in general due to its size and weight or can there be something wrong with the brakes? I figured I would get some feedback from the group before taking it to the shop to have it looked at for possible issues. Thanks in advance and I am glad to be in the group.

welcome aboard. 2020 Tacoma. Should still be under warranty. Right? Have you looked at the brakes? Have you checked the brake fluid?

What are the symptoms? What makes you think they are sticking exactly?

Not following what you are describing.

Sticking brakes usually means they won't release, they drag, etc. Normally associated with everything but the actual stopping process. Exception being a sticking caliper that grabs faster than the other side, causing a quick pull to that side. Even then, the 'sticking' reveals itself in other ways too.

Nothing exotic on these braking systems. Some would even say antiqued with the rear drums.

    So, better description/symptoms would help........

I think I know what you're describing. It's just a byproduct of Toyotas electronic brake booster bs. It takes a while to get used to.

When you're coming to a stop it feels like you're letting off more and more and more but the truck keeps stopping at the same rate, right? Like it's hard to come to those zero G stops?

The Tacoma does a lot of engine braking as well. Maybe you're feeling that? Good way to check would be to turn on ECT and see if it goes away. If so, that's what you're feeling.

Thanks everyone. It is not exactly sticking in the sense that it becomes stuck. It is more like hard breaking in the last couple of feet of the complete stop. You kind of jerk forward the last few feet and I am not adding any additional pressure to the brakes. I will try it with ECT on and see if it changes. There is plenty of Brake fluid and everything was checked when I bought the vehicle. I even had a different dealership do a multipoint inspection when I had it in the shop for a different reason. I appreciate everyone's input.

Yes this is kind of what I am feeling. Thank you. That validates what I might be feeling with the brakes.

Could be a downshift to 1st gear adding significant engine braking. I thought the 2020s had a decently programmed transmission, though.

If it does it every time I would take a dealer tech for a ride or ask that they drive it briefly.

Never noticed anything like that in my truck. Even coming from a car when I first got the truck.

    Weird!

I felt this in my friends 08 4 Runner and my 2017 Tacoma. Pretty annoying but you get used to it.

I don't believe it is a down shift issue. It even happens while I am inching up as I park in the garage. It will almost grab and jerk forward like a hard stop.

Ahh yes, doesn't sound like a downshift.

My 2018 did it and my 2020 does also from time to time. Feels like it has a mind of its own occasionally. Mine happens more in reverse, when I'm backing into my garage. I get a jerking motion, while trying to control the decelleration, while letting up and down on the brakes. Feels like the truck wants to speed up, even with brakes on and no foot on the accelerator. Other times, no problem.......temperamental beeeotch..!

Ahh okay, that makes more sense.
To me, the brakes are good, but very grabby, when I get in to my work F150 (that has very good brakes, but very different) I sometimes feel like I'm either barreling through stop signs looking like a D, or I feel like I'm pushing hard. I prefer the Tacoma's feel.

We own a 2018 and a 2020 and brakes in both are pretty much the same and take some getting used to. The term I also use is "grabby". Seems you get more braking action than the pedal force applied, at certain low-speed stops. My wife complained about it, when she first got her '18, but she has gotten used to it.

I appreciate everyone's input, "grabby" is the term I will use going forward. Sounds like this is just a inherent part of being a Taco owner and something I will get used to in time. You all are the best. Thank you. I can rest easy now.

Since its a used truck maybe the previous owner put some kind of aftermarket pads on that are making it grabby, wouldnt hurt to pull the wheels and do a visual.
