Last night making a run to the Big Box DIY store.

My truck decided to eject half of a heat shield......clang, clang, clang. I see it bouncing in the rearview mirror, turn around to retrieve it. Then go about my business.

About 15 miles later, the truck ejects the other half......clang, clang, clang...... stop, retrieve.

When I was working on the driveshafts, I noticed this heat shield was loose. Didn't have the means to sort it out at the time. I'm pretty sure this is the heat shield under the driver's seat.

The kicker is LOML was with me. After the 2nd ejection, she asked, "Do you need a bumper sticker that says If parts fall off, please honk?" o_O

Sometimes, I really don't like her, but I always love her.

    So, the maintenance/repair continues.

About 9 years ago my 2006 Tacoma started making a rattle noise I noticed at certain times. My neighbor who owns 2005 told me his Tacoma made the same noise too and stopped it using a clamp around the heat shield, so I wrapped a stainless worm gear clamp around the detached side of the heat shield, and to this day it still doesn't make noise.

I had an axe fly off my rack on the highway at 75mph, watching that twirl in the air behind you is a pretty terrifying experience. Luckily we were in the desert on a weekday and no one behind me at the time. Landed off the side of the road, grabbed it and continued on my way. It stays in the bed now.

PSA - those little plastic washers that come with Quickfist mounts can and will break, causing them to slide off and whatever they're holding to go flying. Replace them with metal washers

    Same crap everyone else got
Which side was the one. I just discovered a rattle today that sounds like a heat shield. I got under the truck for a second and checked all ones attached to the body and they were all tight. It's a rattle that only happens at very low rpm cruising around a neighborhood. Can't seem to replicate it when in neutral though.

Yeah, mine made the noise at the same rpm with it being most noticeable at idle. Me and my neighbor both have the 2.7l engine with the heat shield on the passenger side. I would check your heat shield again as mine wasn't noticeable till I pulled/pushed at it from underneath the frame.

It’s a Tacoma, I’d be more worried about the frame condition

I had a yakima skybox 16 blow its lid at 85mph on the freeway. I watched an cased Elite Z28 bow cartwheel perhaps 30-40' in the air and disappear in my rearview mirror. Few other things too. Thankfully it was early pandemic, and the traffic was light. I recovered everything, amazingly enough. Just picked up the bow from the shop this afternoon, where it'd been sitting for repair since Jun 2020.

Install the ejected heat shield today.

Driver's side. Took about 10 minutes, a pair of bolts with Nylock nuts and a worm drive clamp.

I never heard this rattle. I knew it was loose because I discovered it during my U-joint/Carrier bearing replacement.
