The thing is just a spinning around and not coming straight out. Anyone have any ideas? Or is this operator error?

Be carefull. They are known to break off in the hole if you pry on them too much on one side. If you do pry on it make sure you do it evenly 180 degrees apart. And did I mention to be careful they will break off in the hole.

I had the same issue on two of my sensors. I ended up using a large washer with a section cut out to slide around the "shaft" of the sensor, to support the rest of the sensor body while I pried gently with two flat screwdrivers, 180 degrees apart.

One of them busted off in the hole anyway, but I was able to extract it with a dental pick and a lot of quiet swearing.
