Disclaimer: I am not an engineer nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn any time recently but I think I have a pretty good idea.

The main crankshaft bearings in a motor are two pieces with the caps holding them to the block. Why cant something like that be done with these effin' Toyota carrier bearings!?!

I was thinking two of some sort of urethane type insert with perhaps some "molded in" bearings in them (that would act like engine main bearings)that are held together with a metal cap and base. The urethane inserts have tabs or something on their exterior that match slots in the metal cap and base to keep them from spinning.

    What say the crowd?

My beer addled mind says that sounds like a complex design that would be more prone to wear and failure due to the carrier being subjected to a helluva lot more flex than a crankshaft. Also it's an unnecessary complication when the tried and true bearings can be changed by simply unhooking the shaft.

The average engine also has an oil pump that keeps the bearings constantly lubricated at 40-50 psi. Lubrication plays a crucial role in the development of a split bearing

If you are munching through carrier bearings that quickly , there are most likely other reasons why this is happening . Every time we go over bumps with our trucks , the driveshaft has to shorten and lengthen . If for some reason your slip yoke is not functioning correctly , the carrier bearing takes a serious pounding .Then guys install lift kits without properly cancelling the driveshaft angles and all those vibrations are partially sucked up by the carrier bearing . When guys have the driveshaft off , they put the driveshaft back on incorrectly and the carrier bearing is accidently preloaded . These are just a few symptoms of premature carrier bearing failure . There are many more

Clean you would also need to design a covering to keep your new bearings contain the oil and keep the dirt out and also change the oil every oil change.

I've got over 360k miles on my truck and only replaced my carrier bearing once. So I'm not burning through them. But it blew out in the middle of nowhere and I had to limp home.
It just such a labor intensive fix for a "small" part.
I'd rather just undo 2 bolts, pull the old bearings out and slip in two new ones and be on my way in 15 mins or less. Easy trail fix not requiring a lot of tools.
That's my thought process on this.

well made well lubed carrier bearings are proven

what U theorize fail on the inherent vibes

cranshaft bearings correctly are isolated by the steady pressure of oil

Your idea of labor intensive and mine are very far part.

I changed mine when I had the drive shaft rebuilt when the clutch thingy was replaced

    for the want of east/convenience

no way that a 2 piece DRY bearing would work as good or last as long

if U have example of such a creature please reveal

the 2 piece big end rod bearings are under CONSTANT lubrication

save for cranking when only a film or residual amount is present

an ample oil supply under pressure allows a 2 piece babbitt bearing to survive
