Gear/Differential Oil Spec Comparison (nerdy data stuff)

Hello Nerds!

I am by no means a scientist (literally almost failed university chemistry), but I like data and analyzing things. I've developed this for my own viewing and thought it could be handy for TW to have a quick reference document as well.

The specifications taken directly from the manufacturer's technical data sheets (links below), it is recommended you read these before choosing an oil, as it may have useful information regarding applications.

Conditional formatting only highlights the highest (green) and lowest (red) numbers in a row, it does not indicate whether or not it is the best in that category. White cells are in the average.

If you have suggestions for products you'd like to see, or errors somewhere, please let me know and I can update it.

Small notes: I was bummed at how difficult some of these companies have made it to find technical information on their products, some of them use different standardized tests, some layout the information in a manner that is difficult to read, some use very confusing unit numbers. All and all this may not be 100% accurate as there was some deciphering involved.

I would like to include more information but space is limited and more in depth information can be difficult to find.

 

Holy hell, gotta love data collection. Thanks for compiling this together - this will be an interesting read since i did have difficulty on finding "the best" or something close when i did an early change.

IIRC Toyota wont sell you Genuine, but that could have been at some point. I personally have Motomaster 80w-90, wonder where that fits in all of this as it's a more readily available oil.

You could add a GL spec line to your chart.
Redline makes a 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil which matches the Toyota spec for the axles.
Motorcraft makes a full synthetic

75W-90 GL-4 gear oil which matches Toyota spec for the manual transmission.

Updated for you since I still had my sheet open. I had to use the Safety data sheet, and the stuff listed on the CT website, still missing a 100 degree viscosity and the index. I tried looking at Citgo oils to see if one matched up but no luck on a quick search.

Thanks for the recommendation! I've added this as well since I already had it listed on my sheet, just had to snip a little farther.

I do have some of the OEM benchmarks they've passed as well but don't know how to make it clean, I might have to put my data vertically to fit more products/information. I will work on it.

oh boy that's fascinating to see how much of a jump the viscosity is like once it's start to warm up. Where, been a while since i looked at kinematics of fluids, but the 139 refers to a much thicker and slower moving oil as it's worked up. and as you said, the higher number highlighted in "green" doesn't mean "the best" in the category as this one is, but the Motul 300 "technically" is the best as flows a lot more easily meaning less resistance within the gearing.

With resistances, it would indicate burning more fuel... this would explain a few things

oh don't remind me... back in shop class in Highschool... rear diff oil change with 150k on it... the smell... oh god the smell.... why do i still remember it...

Changing the clutch in an old 3 speed Chevy truck, managed to dump 20 year old gear oil in my hair -- my kind of Beatles style hair...

Sorry I forgot to respond to this; some decent information but it seems to be pretty opinion based, he kind of lost me at recommending conventional oils for cost savings.

 

I agree. I had an email from them with more testing and details, but couldn't find it. I'm still researching/ procrastinating. Thanks for new info

 

Harvest King / LK by warren oil? the 2 gal jugs available at most farm stores are convenient and cheap. Interested to see how it compares to Lucas conventional that ECGS recommends.
