I would like to do full leaf pack in the back, because that’s what I’m familiar with. I’ll look at AAL and blocks as a an option. But I don’t know anything about them. I’m ok with the overkill in regards to the use case. The Truck will used %50 be on the trail, %30 driving over shit that I have no business driving over, %30 hauling delicious dead animals through places that might kill me and %10 impressing the neighbors. Oh and %5 making my wife angry. FYI It’s not my DD, but I’ve been driving it daily because I like it. More importantly the lift needs to have superior durability/ longevity. I’m pedantic at maintaining my automobiles, but want something that won’t let me down on the trail.

GOAL: bullet proof lift that wont leave me ball deep in the mud.

I have read many posts of people concerned about king shock maintenance and longevity, but I’ve never seen any sort of authoritative comparison of king shocks to non-rebuildable shocks in that regard. Common sense tells me that when exposed to the same stress that king shocks will last longer because they are a lot beefier and engineered to take a beating.

OP with the setup you described shouldn’t have problems with reliability or the lift leaving you stranded as long as you don’t let the shocks go too long without rebuild. I think the flip side of installing nicer shocks is that it may degrade the lifespan of other components, nothing drastic mind you but I thinks it’s a possibility. I think it’s only natural to drive slightly faster and hit obstacles a little harder than you would in the stock set up because you feel less impact. So just paying attention to things like TRE’s and LBJ’s may become something you check more often.

Who said everything needs to add up to %100? Who quantifies the % of time we do things and says, “the minimum is %100”. It’s all subjective, %100 of the time? What I do know, is that you wasted your time, adding up the % I spend pissing off my wife and impressing my neighbors. Fucking useless.

I spent a lot time on this forum debating back and forth about installing an OME kit or a kit with kings. In the end I went with the kings. During daily driving and crawling around tight trails I don’t notice a big difference in shock performance compared to a stock. I do notice a difference when driving fast down low maintenance forest roads. The biggest things I notice are the extra clearance provided by the lift and the 33” tires and the traction provided by the mud terrains.

I'm pretty sure "math" says that those particular percentages need to add up to 100%.

I don't consider it a waste... I have to keep those 3rd grade adding skills honed to perfection.

Thanks, got it! I always browse the forums on my phone so I never see signatures.

I do have one question for ya. Are the IMS59-50220 shocks extended travel (spring lift + 1") or limitedto the lift you get from the spring?

I was in the same boat, wanted a high quality setup, was torn between King or Fox. I ultimately decided to go for a stage 4 Fox setup w/ adjusters.

If you want all the gory details & pictures you can click here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/superdave-to-the-rescue-stage-4-fox-kit-is-in.716493/

Otherwise don't need to clog up your thread with all that.

The main thing that convinced me to go Fox over King was this article: https://accutuneoffroad.com/fox-vs-king-oem-coilovers/

Seemed like it was an unbiased opinion, since they sell both of them. I don't have enough info to refute their opinions/findings. The overall take away is that the Fox appear to be more durable.

A secondary (much less important) reason was that I wasn't crazy about the blue anodizing of the Kings, and the Fox fit the grey/black theme of my rig better. However I've seen custom Kings done in different colors, but no way I would have waited for that in these times we are in.

Either way, the difference is amazing once you go offroad. Haven't had that much time to break them in yet, but there are certain areas where I had to keep the speed down to 15-20mph to keep control and minimize bouncing, whereas now I tool along at a controlled 40mph

They're fully threaded for height, so you can set them wherever you want.

Of course it does. I keep my phone locked in portrait, so I had no clue. I forced desktop to get the code from his signature.

“A shop I trust has also mentioned reaaaaaaaally long turn-around times for getting King shock back from them on a rebuild lately. 14 weeks.”

Daaamnn. Is there a back order on rebuild kits or is that just the shop’s backed up schedule?

I will 2nd or 3rd the comments that have said kings are a waste for a daily driver and light off roading. Just because your budget is $5k doesn’t mean blowing extra money will pay any dividends.

Dobinsons is great and Mike is very active here on the forums. Spend the extra could grand you save on other things. Wheels, tires, body armor, coke and hookers.

They can definitely take a beating, but like all race components, they're meant to be inspected or rebuilt after each race. They just last longer on a daily driver that isn't racing every day.

The simplest thing I point out to people about Kings, and I think Kings are great by the way, is that they have no rubber lower bushings or upper strut mounts, so all NVH passes throughout the coilover and into the frame of the vehicle as well. I'd say just that alone of not having some isolation of the coilover movement helps them to deteriorate faster.

That's also why some people get them rebuilt sooner than others, because they get used harder. Some people wear out brake pads a lot faster than others too, and it all depends on how they're used.
