    i cut a sidewall on my spare last year (light) wheeling with the tire under the truck and i even had it aired down for some additional puncture resistance.

    i had a bumper with higher clearance than stock so i usually throw it in the bed but had my camper on and didnt have room for it. try finding a replacement 255/80/17 in a small town on short notice LOL. the cut was in a place most shops would never be willing to fix but this older gentleman at the small shop at the next town said "i have been fixing tires for 52 years and that patch will outlast the tire even there." i downgraded the tire from being part of a 5 tire rotation to emergency use only but its still fine.

    Everyone's conflicted whether or not to run the tire underneath.
    it's simple, Skid plates are always the answer

    How much weight is being added by installing a skid plate under the spare tire?

    Yup. I wont say steel is useless in this case, but for our terrain like Ardbeg - an aluminum plate would be enough as the end goal is not get cuts into the sidewall of the spare and to let it slide over stull.
    hell, even cutting board material would be mint.

    Something in the 10-15lb range should be en-tire-ly possible. :D

    The inflated tire itself is more than capable of supporting the weight. Also assuming, whatever it backs onto(truck side) is fine with the weight, a think light, steel, alu, or HDPE should work as a cut prevention slider. As the tire is providing the load capacity/backing to the material, deflection is not much of a concern so keeping light and thin is possible. Just because weight of HDPE is at the front of mu mind right now, ~10lbs would be easy to achieve.

    Unpack the covers ASAP. Wet Okole says to avoid folding the covers to prevent creasing. Part of the reason direct shipping from Wet Okole is ~$80 US for two seat covers - they use a large flat box.

    yeah exactly, Like i mentioned, the goal is to prevent cuts/ let the system slide. So following the sketchup image;

    don't even need to do much to the HDPE sheet if you can get your hands on a 32"x32" sheet.
    cut it into a circle shape of some sort and then cut some slots for a ratchet strap or 2.

    UHMW is the go-to for plastic skids used on everything from ATVs to Ultra4 race trucks. However, it's expensive: https://www.grainger.ca/en/product/SHEET,UHMW,BLACK,1-4-IN-T,48X96-IN/p/WWG2NHY2

    1/2" plywood and the fancy silver duct tape it is...
    that's absurdly expensive at $380 (lets say 400)

    granted that's enough material for 2 plates. so $200 a pop for 2 people.
    still pricey.
