I'm curious about what you find... I've had my eye on that area as well. Most of what I've found online simply says "high-clearance 4wd required", and all the sites seem to be copy/pasting info from each other. I did see some user-submitted trail reviews (I think they were on AllTrails?) that said the road is passable in a stock Jeep (what does that even mean, though? Base model? Rubicon?) or even a decent crossover, but I'd take those with a grain of salt.

it's a rough route back there... not overly difficult, but it's not short and it's rough. one of those where when you get to the end, you're glad the bouncing is over with.

interesting to hear it got absorbed by a wilderness... i wonder if they'll keep the route open as a cherry stem. i hope so. definitely a unique part of our state.

Avenza is a viewer for raster image “map”, split up into tiles.

think of a restaurant placemat for kids that they color on with crayons. Take a pair of scissors and cut it into a grid of squares. That’s how Avenza splits it up and your device downloads it.

The quality is usually low, the content is usually outdated, the app itself is not very good.

for non-technical people, it may be an ok solution if the content is there, but even then, their “store” where you get maps really sucks to search and navigate.

Unless I'm missing something, the wilderness status isn't particularly new--it's been that way since 1993.

Yeah, that describes a lot of Colorado trails, LOL. The South Fork site had this pretty good description:

Almost tempts you to make a day hike of it rather than driving the whole way around, but that's a long day hike.

i have avenza for a backup for MVUM information if i cannot get it on my gaia maps... i have stored all MVUM of CO and i have used it a good amount. useful when you are looking for areas to camp since the MVUm will indicate where camping is allowed and give you information related to how far off the road you can camp and seasonal information.. all info gaia does not provide.

As of last year when I went, the road back to Wheeler is passable by most any truck or SUV with four wheel drive. There are no difficult obstacles, the worst you'll deal with is some steeper climbs and ruts. I though all the descriptions of the difficulty were way oversold. It is a bit rough though, so bring a way to air down and back up again. The one thing you'll want to watch out for is rain. There's a few sections of clay that get incredibly slick when wet that could send you into the trees or get your stuck at the bottom of a hill if you're not careful. It's a neat area, but only work visiting about once. Plenty of dispersed camping is available at the end of the road near the monument, so I'd recommend taking two days to do it unless you're already in the area and don't mind a long day.

    EDIT:
Found a photo of the road about a mile from reaching the end.

Thanks, good info! My thought was to try and get up there before the typical afternoon shower in August, explore and camp, then head back down the next morning for the next adventure. Road looks to be in good condition! Just seems to be a pretty cool sight to see, and I've driven past Pool Table Road more times than I can count.

Appreciate the input. You are definitely correct about the store. It sucks. But it was the best "I" could find when looking about six years ago. I haven't use it much the last three years or so. Can you recommend another app that works better?

Most people seem to really like Gaia. I tried it on an old hand-me-down Android tablet with no GPS chip (used an external Dual GPS), but got frustrated as it is not very intuitive to use and I hate reading instructions on how to use software. Plus I had wires going everywhere, powering the tablet, GPS, GoPro, phone, etc.

Recently picked up a cheap Walmart tablet (an onn. Tablet Pro) to JUST run Gaia. It has a clean, simple Android 10 build and has a built-in GPS chip, although it doesn't have a compass. It runs Gaia very well and has plenty of space for maps. And, I spent some time actually learning how to use the software. If you download maps for the area you need while you are online, it works great, just sucks when you don't have the map you need and have to find cell service or free WiFi.

For offroad nav, try myTrails. It's a little less user friendly than Gaia, but it's also free/very cheap and a one time expense. Offers a ton of base map options, and there's some neat things you can do with importing tracks, and the offline map functions works pretty well.

I typically run that and substitute with Avenza georeferenced MVUMs when I'm in an area that has a lot on unmapped/illegal trails to try and stay on the right side of the law.

A first hand account! Just what I was l looking for. It seems like one of the few places not over run with people because of the difficulty getting there. The wife and I want to make a trip out there since it was something I never got to see growing up in Colorado.

Being completely new to visiting the area, I started looking around for a trail guide in the Silverton area. I see some tours and Jeep rentals. Though, I was surprised to see there are no trail guide or spotter services being offered.

I would be interested in hiring a guide/spotter to follow through Black Bear Pass.

When you thinking of making your trip? A few of us from the front range thought about heading out there this summer for a few days. No need to pay us, if you want to run the trail when we do, we'll just set up a day to meet and run it.

Hello, we are visiting this week from Michigan. Been to this awesome state several times and love it here. We are in Denver today but tomorrow we are headed to Mogote to camp for a couple of nights. Can anyone recommend any trails in that area? Or anything we should see or do in that area? TIA and say hi if you see me!

Medano Pass Primitive Road is partially open up to the 4th creek crossing, 6.4 miles (10 km) from the southern entrance of the road. The road is gated at this location. Heavy snow fell on the park and preserve May 18, delaying the opening of the road. The road is gated on the east side of the range at Muddy Creek crossing, USFS. Primitive campsites in the lower part of Medano Canyon are now accessible by high-clearance 4WD vehicle.
