Currently running 265/70r16 Ridge Grapplers, trying to decide what to go to next. 33s sound super appealing, but I'm just not sure. Truck is a 2012 DCSB, lifted 2" in the front and 1.5" in rear. Wheels would be TRD Pro/SEMA 4runner wheels.

    255/80r17
    Pros:
    - Looks more badass
    - Much better ground clearance than current

    Cons:
-Truck is more prone to rollover
    -Truck may be too high?
    -Fitting Spare difficult?
    -Speedometer inaccurate
    -Potential rubbing issues

    265/70r17
    Pros:
    - Speedometer accuracy improves over current
    - Slightly better ground clearance than current
    - Less prone to rollover
    - Less concern about fitment/rub or spare

    Cons:
-Not significantly different than what I have now
    -Doesn't look as cool

I think I would prefer the pizza cutters, but I need some feedback from those of you who have run the pizza cutters, or both sizes ideally. Any issues with rubbing, how'd you fit a full size spare, and how'd you correct your odo/speedo? How did traction compare between the two?

I have 265/70r17 on the TRD Pro wheels. They fit nice but I wish I went with a little wider tire like 285/70r17

If your truck is anything like mine, I had to cut a ton of plastic with 255/80/17 and am even contacting my cab mount and need to chop it. In my experience, 255s are not straight bolt on replacements

I can say that I have 265/70 17 WP at3s and I’m looking at upping the size to 255/80 17 in the same tire. For me, i think the capability is worth it.

another thing to consider is that all 255/80 tires are E rated, to my knowledge.

Have you considered 275/70R17. I'm leaning more toward that size than the 255/80's. Majority of the tires in the 275 range are 32.2 with the Wildpeaks coming in at 32.4. The 275's are 1/2 an inch bigger in diameter than the 265's

I know that for me weight is a consideration, which is why I’m looking at the 255s. But if weight wasn’t an issue I’d probably look for a 285 since there are a ton of options.

Cooper ST Maxx 255/80-17’s on 4Runner rims. 2014 Sport.

The only rubbing I had was on the front mud flaps. Also had to remove the little front chin flap. The spare kind-of fits. Still need to cut the tailpipe at the rear axle.

I have, there doesn't seem to be a lot of options in that size though, and from what I've read seems about half the people had to CMC anyway and lost the same amount of MPGs as going to a 285.

Level 8 wheels, 17 inch with 0 offset. OME lift, but waiting on ADS to arrive, but lift is not the problem

All the Level 8 wheels are at least an inch wider than the TRD Pro wheels, may have something to do with it.

Quite a few things at this point..
I LOVE my skinny 33s, 255/85r16 Yokohama Geolandar MTs. Have done LOTS of offroading with them too. If you want 33s with less work, get the skinnies. The tires fit without any modding as well did my spare without any modding. Ride felt the same as when I was running 265/75r16s KO2s, but the new tires have outperformed the KO2s offroad and on road so far.

I used a speedo calibrator by rough country to fix my odo and speedo btw

Also my spare is actually a 255/80r17. I chose it for price and because it was ever so slightly smaller in diameter just to be sure it'd fit. It's also completely deflated to also help with fitting. I have on-board air so it's not a problem to air it up when needed.

Split the difference and go to 32". Can't go wrong with 255/75/17. Get some extra height, save on weight (with the right tire), and zero modifications required.P1290244.jpg

the only thing that I’m worried about are that most of those tires in that size are rated and I do some rugged/rocky trails.

I’d be worried about getting a flat.

how has your experience been with the 4s tires off road?

No kidding. I really wonder how much having an e rated tire actually matters for 90% of people. I was almost sold on a 255/75 until I got cold feet about p-rated. I don’t want to spend 1000 CAD on a set and then get a flat on my next outing.

I've now put some serious distance on the Coopers on very rugged/rocky FSR's and completely beat-up and overgrown back-country logging roads/tracks, and so far, so good. No true, Moab-style, rock crawling though - and probably never will, just because of how I use the truck, and because I don't live close to Moab ;).
