    Shopping for 2021 TRD O/R
So, serious question. I've been a Toyota guy for along time, several 4Runners, a first gen Taco, Wife's on her 4th Highlander... etc. I just sold my 2020 Platinum Tundra, great truck but more then I needed and had no issues in a year. I'm looking at buying a new 2021 Taco 4WD O/R for the things Toyota is known for, quality and reliability. However I seem to be reading more about all sorts of issues with the 3rd gen (beyond the common drivetrain issues of hunting, hesitation) like all sorts of electrical gremlins, leaks, shimmys and noises, things that Toyota is not "known" for and is problematic dealer-diagnose-and-fix stuff. With that, would you buy another 3rd gen tomorrow? Are these just anomalies or is there a building trend of issues creeping into the brand / model? I'll be leaving it basically stock, but don't need my new truck not to start, or my lights going out and not coming back on, and so on. TIA for the feedback.

I would buy another new 3rd gen in a heartbeat. My truck has been solid and has none of the TW issues.

Oh and and welcome to TW!

My 16 has been a champ.

Most you'll see here is things that are wrong... and what tires fit and what LED to use, lift blah blah. To answer your question, I would buy again.

TW is a hot bed for complaints, problems and generally all things negative. There are significantly less people who come on TW to talk about how reliable their truck is and how much they enjoy it. Some people do this, but WAY more come here to complain and talk about issues they are having because of mods.

If you had good experiences with toyota up to this point and believe in the brand/product then you should get another one. It doesn't sound like you really have a reason to avoid toyota personally, so why even stir the pot? If you go on the other forums for ford, dodge, nissan, etc. you'll see very similar trends about mostly threads for complaints and problems.

As long as I have the means, I will never buy a used vehicle again.

Most of the Taco problems people have here are related to the mods they have done to their truck.

"I put a 3 inch lift on my truck and now I hear this grinding noise."

Absolutely! Was in my Gen 2 for 8 years. Been in my Gen 3 now for a year. Not a single issue.

I have a 2021 OR 4x4 that I bought in November, and I’ve owned 9 Toyota trucks/4runners over the past 3 decades. I LOVE my new Tacoma and it is better than any of my previous trucks in pretty much every way possible (except maybe my ‘97 4runner which I still own - but that’s mostly because I’ve built it up over 20 years and I have a lot of memories with it). No issues at all with my new Taco, it drives awesome. I’ve learned that there a lot of people here on TW coming from the car world and buying new Tacos with car-type expectations (and complaining about not having enough power/speed, not a smooth enough ride, etc...). It’s a mid-size V6 truck, so if you have mid-size V6 truck expectations, then you’ll probably love it like I do. And we always read about the 1 in a 100 problems on here, but not the other 99 who don’t have that problem, because people don’t go on the internet and talk about not having problems near as much as the opposite. So hell yeah, I would buy it again!

I would buy it again if they put a v8 in it . Lol the v6 with a manual is a bit slow off the line I’m not expecting a sports car out of a truck . But dam this truck is sluggish as shit in low gears . I would definitely not buy a auto again my 18 hunted gears like a mofo and I test drove the 20 one wasn’t as bad but it did do it. To some degree .

Depends where I was in life and how far my commute was to work. Kind of just got it because I figured I needed a truck for the next stage in my life entering my 30s and foresaw a bigger need for it. But man gas is killing me here in Cali I’m doing about $50-60 a week and that’s driving around 200 miles a week. Not to mention the tags for it are about $500 a year.

as far as any issues I haven’t had any except for things I’ve brought onto myself like changing out my grill and sporadically getting the pcs light come on. TPMS light coming on because the wheel shop didn’t do the job right. I did take it in for a fuel pump recall but other than that shes had no issues.

    Short A...YES.

This forum has a lot of whiners. Tacoma is not perfect, but there's no mid-sized that's better(or even close).

I'd buy my 2017 again in a heartbeat. Now, I'm holding on to it as along as it runs or when the perfect midsize EV pickup comes along.

I'm on my third 3rd gen Tacoma and YES, I would buy another tomorrow (assuming I could find one lol). These trucks aren't perfect, but I haven't had any significant issues with any of mine and I haven't had any reason to question the reliability. As others have said, you will always hear more complaints on a forum like this. People that aren't having problems are not creating threads just to say they aren't having problems. Those that do have problems are also usually much more vocal than others. My experience has been great with the 3rd gen Taco, so I would happily buy another one.

Yes - I bought mine used (was planning on buying new but found a killer deal on a slightly used truck with low miles) and wouldn't hesitate to buy another 3rd gen. Of course that would mean I would need a reason to get rid of my current truck and I'm getting rather attached to it.

We own 2, '18 and '20. Both TRD OR 4x4. I bought the '18 for my wife and liked it so much I traded my '17 F250 for the '20. I had same issue with the F250 you had with your Tundra. Great truck but really more than I needed. Plus the used car values are nuts, right now. I do miss the room in the F250 but not parking it. Also miss the V8 power, and sound (Ford seems to always have great sounding V8 engines), but no regrets going with a Taco. Our '18 has 30K miles and the '20 has 11K miles. Both bought used but neither has had any issue since we've owned them.

Yep, if our 17 was written off I would be walking into the dealership for a new one.

Even with the ‘bad transmission’ and all those ‘new platform’ ‘first few model year’ posts our truck has been perfect.

    would buy again.
