Cool. I towed a loaded 4k travel trailer over the winter park and then to grandlake with a 3.4 and 225k. You got this.

Just to clarify I did not say you shouldn’t do that or you can’t I just said it will be a pita towing in the Rockies since that sounds like what you are primarily going to do. But it’s going to be stressful, tiring and not fun with the Taco. It’s going to be sloooow going up long grades. Coming down long winding grades/roads , especially sharp turns and narrow roads can be technically difficult , stressful and tiring. And then you have the winds in the mountains. When big wind gusts hit your trailer sideways it can be down right dangerous. Or if you are climbing uphill against the wind you’ll see what real slow is like in the Taco. Ive pulled trailers in the Colorado mountains and up in the mountains of Montana but I did it with an F250. Your truck will do it for sure, just that the drive will be stressful and not at all relaxing.
Good suggestions have already been stated here. Just want to emphasize drive in 4 not D and on real steep grades you may want to go down to 3 or even 2 so the tranny does not keep shifting.
Out of curiosity are you new to towing or are you an experienced trailer hauler?

I know you will be fine because my truck tows 6000lb trailers to the desert almost every weekend, through windy mountain roads for about an hour of the trip. I have 200k miles and no issues. take it slow and use engine braking. The good thing about tacos is they have a really good radiator so take advantage of that.

Here’s an idea for you and your husband...go rent a similar trailer for a weekend and find out for yourself.

Towing 4K on a flatbed trailer will not be the same experience as towing 4K of camper. Wind resistance is a huge factor.

I made this mistake, and ended up going back to a 1 ton diesel from a Toyota Tundra.

I towed a RPod 179 with a 2009 OR throughout Colorado for a few years. Similar set up to you. I used an app to monitor trans temps and ended up putting another larger trans cooler inline with the stock one which kept temps down. Bypassed it during the winter.
Once I added the extra cooler, the truck did fine. Trailer brake controller is an easy add and keep it out of overdrive. Always filled the water tanks at or close to camp sites and dumped tanks first chance you get. Towing a travel trailer over 10000’ passes is much different than towing at lower elevations in a Tacoma. The extra slow speeds up the mountains just got old so I bought a new F150 for a tow vehicle this summer. Keeping my Tacoma though!
