When I try to shift my tacoma from park into gear the gear selector is loose until it gets down to 3rd and then will shift into reverse. The actual transmission is fine because I can go under the truck and shift through all the gears by actually moving the shift selecting lever on the side of the transmission. Whats the best way to go about trying fixing this issue?

When you shift it from underneath with the lever does it indicate properly on the Combination meter for P, R, N, D,...? If so it seems you have a defective/damaged shift cable.

Fixed the problem. The linkage cable had came undone from the actual shift lever. Looks like there was a small plastic oring clip that held the cable on to the actual shift selector. Slid the linkage cable back onto the shifter and used a small zip tie to hold it into place.
