So this story starts with me taking my truck into the dealer to have the oil changed before a trip as the oil was at 7500 miles only to have the dealer tell me that "the synthetic is good for 10,000 miles" and I was less than amused. I decide that I'll go the 10K they recommend and then have the oil tested to see just how bad 10K is on an engine as well as get an idea of the overall health of the motor before adding the supercharger. I ordered a Blackstone sample kit and drained the oil at 11,700 miles, this is the results I received from them:

*These are hard stop and go with extended sitting with summer to winter temps and towing a load of 4,000lbs

As a total noob.... what are those readings telling you? That 11k is way too long to wait for an oil change?

Dealer was 100% right. If running full synthetic, and assume normal driving habits, your results show a 10K interval is perfectly acceptable.

That a 10K oil change interval is fine.

No, that 11K is just fine for an interval.

May I ask how long the period was from 0 to 11k miles?

I did this with my motorcycle. It called for a 2.5k oil change which is insanity. I was commuting 120 miles a day for work, and did not want to do oil changes every month. I sent in oils at 2.5k, 4k, and 5k... They all came back identical in wear... Based on the tests, I was able to determine that an oil change a season worked great for my bike.

The irony is, this was the factory spec oil, so they obviously knew it could go longer than they specified. In fact a couple years after I got my bike, they changed the oil change interval to 5k with the same engine, and oil...

I run peanut oil mostly. I used to get doughnut oil, but the dogs kept following me home. I tried sperm whale oil, but what followed me home was something I’d rather forget.

The report is saying that everything was great even with 11,786 miles on the oil.

I would have to go through my records but I believe it was around 12-14 months.

That's awesome, so the OE filter held up that long without compromising the oil quality.

These threads are always fun to read. Hard for me to understand why people plunk tons of money in a new rig only to be cheap with oil changes. I mean...$50 oil change vs $7,000 engine. But the Blackstone thing is just cool anyways.

To be fair it’s just my opinion and experience. But let’s be honest, car companies are extending oil change intervals largely to gloat about “low ownership cost”. Not to mention if you read the fine print may people fall under the “extreme conditions” category as described by Toyota. So their oil change intervals fall under the 5,000 mile category.

I’m just adding fuel to fire. My apologies. :bananadead:

The truck was bought new and I had a service contract to provide oil changes but when I realized that they wouldn't change it when I wanted I decided to do the oil test. Now that I am running the blower I am going to stick to a 5000 mile interval for the next few oil changes until I get a supercharged sample to them and see where I am at.

Good thinking. It will be neat to see if there is a difference. Dealer told me the same thing when I went in for my first service before 10k. I’ve just done everything myself since then. I will have to go back soon for the transmission flush tho.
