Bought a house a few weeks back. Decided to go ham and get some big items checked off before I move in this week.

Living room when I bought it:

The cool thing about house mods, unlike truck mods, is they actually increase the value of the house ha!

Holy crap I actually had a pleasant experience with an insurance company... is this the twilight zone???o_O

Got a letter in the mail saying I owed 1700 bucks for an ambulance ride and that my insurance never responded to the claim... Call the insurance company and after essentially no hold time I get a real human who looks it up and confirms that they were paid, and gets a check confirmation number and even calls up the ambulance company on my behalf to sort out the billing screw up.

I worked in the health insurance world for a brief bit.... it helped me lose more faith in humanity.

"Sir I understand you went to your normal doctor, but when they sent out your blood to the lab, the lab wasn't in network. So you owe the $6k.

"Once the child is born, they start accumulating their own medical claims. So the child that lived for only 10 hours after being born, you are responsible for that bill"

" I understand you made sure the facility, surgeon was in network. But the day of the operation the normal anesthesiologist wasn't available, the one who helped was out of network. So you owe that money."

"When you were in the hospital, there was a doctor to popped their head in and submitted a claim for their 5 minute consultation. They were out of network. So you owe the money"

And so many providers will submit claims, and the health insurance will reject them. Some will re-code and resubmit, others will say screw it just bill the patient directly. Never ever pay a provider bill, without first cross referencing the Explanation of Benefits. The EOB is what your health insurance will send you, which tells you how much they paid the provider, and if you owe anything on top of that.

Holy hell man I wouldn’t be able to do some of that.

But yea I have been buried under piles and piles of EOB letters and I read them all. It’s almost funny that I joked on here about my biopsy burning through a lot of that deductible and then a few weeks later I have a huge life changing hospital visit... I should learn to keep my stupid mouth shut!

Feels like death from a thousand cuts though. 250 here, 37 there, 148 somewhere else, 15 from some place that has a broken ass website that won’t take my credit card... :angrygirl:

Did your insurance company get you setup with a case manager? That'll help lessen the paperwork load and confusion on you.

Yeah they offered me but I declined (maybe foolishly) thinking I would just handle it myself. So far it hasn't been too bad aside from that one bill for $15 ($15.63, excuse me) that has a jank website that just yeets any payment info I put in into an infinite loading loop no matter the browser or computer I use. I called the help line and it literally said "thank you for calling [doctor] please hold for the next available rep" , as in, it actually said that generic placeholder of "doctor" out loud.

The ambulance one caught me off guard but that was handled in just a few moments. Of course there's another bill that arrived today (matching the EOB's and with payments/corrections) that's a nice $630 kick in the ol dickeroo.:anonymous:

It makes me glad that one of the few things I am actually good at is separating/cordoning off money for various budget stuff and just NOT TOUCHING IT even though I might really want something else.

Gotta love American health care system for this crap. It’s as bad as taxes. Y’all know what I paid and make. Why’s do I have to do all the paperwork every year?
97k in the hole for one kid here. And he didn’t even live. They wonder why people go postal.

I'll avoid getting too political here since this isn't the place for it, but it seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don't setup.
I have a buddy who lives in a country with a health care system that is often referred to as "socialized" and he got absolutely debilitating headaches that included tunnel vision. It took him over 3 years before a neurologist could see him on the public health care. 3 years for something that you'd think should be pretty high priority...

But yeah the stress is enough to drive you nuts. I need to work on stress management actually- part of what sent me to the hospital in the first place appears to have been a failure cascade of stress. Lupus flare started because of stress, kidneys got sideways, kidneys stop regulating blood pressure well, stress keeps up and blood pressure got off the rails, suddenly I'm at like 180/120 and my brain is swelling and I can't see... :(

Feel ya on the stress, I got diagnosed last year (mid lockdown) with Shingles at the ripe age of 32. Doctor said stress was mostly likely what brought it out.

It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders so that's good. And always feel free to reach back out to your insurance and ask for a case manager. They can help with more than just paperwork, and usually they are RN's.
