I did one pre2019. Did the rules change? It was a bitch and the whole thing hinged on the mood of the referee on that day. There used to be a thread on pirate that listed the easy to work with referees, but it was deleted. I wonder if the info had been copied to another forum, but it is way out of date by now.

Yes, Oct 2019 they changed some of the classifications for what vehicles you can swap from -> into
I've done a gm 5.7 into an S10, but they were both pre obd2 and pre 2019

My goal is to swap a gm ls5.3 into my 01 tacoma

I would start talking to Referees before you do anything. Finding one willing to talk with you about options is a challenge in itself. Tell them your goals (Better Mileage, newer generation motor, etc.)

I spoke with one today, and he helped me understand how California recognizes the classifications.

another thing that has changed (according to the ref I spoke with today) is you can't do the VATS (vehicle anti theft system) delete, which use to be allowed to my knowledge

Interesting, as in your Tacoma's VATS? or the donor? I'm pretty sure the tacoma immobilizer is integrated into the ecu so I would assume you would have to keep both the old and the new (donor) ecu.

Did he mention anything changed regarding swapping engines from vehicle classes? Ex: swapping a motor from a Sports coupe (corvette LS) to our Light truck

Highly depends on the ref but the most stringent (I've heard) in Sac county I talked to once about engine swapping my truck (2001 Tacoma). Basically he said your donor can't go over the GVWR for your vehicle. Any Chevy with a 5.3 (and I mean any, I looked into the GMC Envoy that came with a 5.3 in it at one time but the GVWR was higher than my truck) will be over our trucks GVWR. You'll have to check Chevy Colorados but they may be close to our GVWR and came with a 5.3 which is very rare. It was nice talking with a ref though as they will tell you exactly what they want to see. Obviously all the emissions from the donor have to be operational.

The V8 that could legally go into my truck (2001 prerunner double cab V6, possibly the highest GVWR 1st gen Tacoma made) with far less fuss than a Chevy V8 is an early 4th gen 4runner 4.7 without VVTI and that was confirmed by the ref in Sac County. I just gave him license plate numbers of a bunch of vehicles to look up the GVWR and he would say yes or no.

I have heard some refs out in the valley are less strict so you may have to do some calling around to find one that is less particular.

The one I talked to said you have to stay within the same GVWR rating of the vehicle you are swapping. Can't go higher or lower even though lower GVWR has more stringent smog regulations (apparently).

Ooh I bet I can make use of the info in here. I’m going to have a spare 3uzfe soon and I thought of picking up an old car, like a 70’s Corolla, and swapping it in.

    Donor VATS
1st gen Tacoma’s are a LDT on this list so donor engine must be a LDT and the Tacoma’s year or newer and larger displacement

Pre-VVTI 4.7 is in the 2003-2004 4runners BUT not Tundras or Sequoias since the GVWR is higher.

Riddle me this, look on the sticker inside your driver door and tell me what the GVWR is for your truck. My guess is its a lot lower than my 2001 double cab (5100lbs). Your truck might be so low that you could use a car engine lol

    I don’t have a sticker on my door/door post
My truck has one legal identification number riveted on the door post by Highway Patrol

That’s one thing I specifically asked the referee about
There are plenty of 5.3s, but I’ll throw this out there - look at the attached pdf for reference vehicles

all of the 5.3s that match the light duty truck LDT are 2007 and newer
