Any suggestions on where to look..small oil leak rear of engine..I can see oil on exhaust pipe below exhaust manifold on driver side. Was wondering if it was a common problem with 3.4 & where it could be leaking from. I don’t believe it’s coming from the valve cover.

    Photo?
It’s usually the valve cover gaskets,
Or possibly the front diff vent valve

Thanks for the replies..you’ve given me a good starting point. Is it common for the cam plugs to go bad at 124k?

Yes and no, but remember those gaskets are 20 years old so yes,

Get a mirror and look behind there, it will be obvious or your hands to see if you can feel oil there

This is kind of common. I have a leak as well and mine is at the cam plugs. I'm redoing it all and you need quite a few things to do it correctly.

    1 X Toyota FIPG Sealant 00295-00103
4 X Halfmoons 11183-62010 (I think it is 4 but it might be 2. I haven't looked closely to see.)
    2 X Cam Plugs 11188-62010
    2 X Intake Plenum Gaskets 17176-62040
    1 X Throttle body gasket 22271-62050
    2 X Valve cover gasket 11213-62020
    6 X Spark Plug tube seals 11193-70010
    16 X Valve cover washer seals 90210-05007

Oh yeah, and while you are in there you might as well do your wires, spark plugs, and PCV valve and rubber grommet.

If you have a 3.4 motor this is a very common repair that you WILL have to address sooner or later.
I’ve had to do mine 3 times in 660,000 miles in 24 years
Read through this link and you will know what your up against.

It’s not a hard job, just time consuming,
1st timer might take 6 hours going slow. Maybe 2 or 3 hours if you know what your doing and have all the parts and no hiccups.
    Cleaning everything is time consuming
But there are a few things to be aware of if you do the job,
    1) if the plastic wire harness starts to break apart, probably will use tesa tape to
wrap it and keep it together
    2) torque numbers, valve covers are in inch pounds NOT FOOT
    3) getting half moons out without damage, pulling straight out, if you wiggle back and forth will break the lip on them
    4) taking photos so you remember how all the hoses line up
5)getting ALL the old gasket material off the heads and valve covers,
    6) use a dremel, wire wheel a the hand wand to get down in the joints.
