You could make it 2 pieces on a router table. A base and raised panel. Probably easier and safer.

Yes typical WW trick is to build up a profile...much easier than finding some complex bit and making pounds of sawdust.

That's the exciting thing about wood working, there's always different ways to approach a problem. My first thought as to how to duplicate that feature would be to use a table saw set with a sacrificial fence with a 1/2" dado stack set at half the board depth and cut a rabbit around the 3 edges. Then use a router table with the fence set to hold the bit at the correct height and offset to cut the round-over. If you dont have a router table, you could set up a jig or edge-guide to follow the edge profile. If you dont have a dado stack to cut a rabbit, you could use a 1/2" rabbit bit or 1/4" whatever the measurements of the profile say. I can only guesstimate based on the picture.

for sure easiest way to do it if its not imperative that its all one piece like the original in pic

When a knight takes out a pawn from a higher position it is a requirement that the player says "THIS IS SPARTA!!" and knocks the piece right off the board. Looks cool!

Glueing boards edge to edge. I turned the center columns to a 3” diameter.

My daughter is graduating from the University of Nebraska with a Masters in Psychology on Friday. (She’s still got a ways to go to get her PhD.) She asked me to make some pens to give to her friends for a graduation present.

So here they are in Husker Red and black:
