New gears is a must have especially with the way his build is looking. Pretty soon he will have to floor it to get anywhere uphill or windy. After thousands of miles of driving off road and cross county. New gears is the single most important thing you can do imho which is why I'm getting them next. Every auto Tacoma "Needs" new gears.

They're super easy to install! And really help light up the cargo area. They come on with the cargo light in the back of the roof. 10/10 would recommend.

 

I'm running stock tires, and the truck struggles to go anywhere uphill or in wind. Gears arent just for bigger tires. It's for better drive ratio, and helps with mpgs as well as actually moving the truck with out flooring it.

If all you every do is keep your truck stock then yes gears wouldn't be my first choice. I'd rather just get a tune, but OPs build has a roof rack and bed rack. Those alone already cause a ton of drag. So no they arent pointless or only for larger tires.

the Core shifter is a shifter assembly to replace the stock one under the boot. it does also come with the arm and a knob of your choice, but you can replace the knob with anything you like. the trick for you is getting your hands on a Core... they are usually backordered and not easy to get info from.

It's not supper expensive as far as mods go. This will make a night a day difference in ride quality, especially at speed. Prevents dangerous bottom outs and keeps the ride controlled. Even over speed bumps and dips around town they help.

 

"desert".... even more reason to get the gift I mentioned. Don't want to bottom out over the desert trails...

you can get his kit that covers all the bits except the shifter surround. i used another vendor's ring for that part for a few bucks. don't think meso is doing a MT version just for that unless i missed something.

 

Forget the surprise. Just ask him what he wants. What if you pick out something that he hates and then he's compelled to put it on his truck because his lovely wife bought it out of love?

 

Go down to Steiner's and get him a gift certificate. That way if he wants a dash cam, subwoofer or remote start he can get whatever he wants.
