semester-long project partners make me want to commit turtle

hi. today i am complaining about my project partners

yeah we've had some assignments that I haven't contributed my fair share on (drafting an idea report, conducting interviews for research).

however the main project of this course is an application/website... like something we are supposed to dedicate around 2 months of work for this class into

...

well we have 5 days left before its due, 2 days before we have to present.

i'm the person who created the github & has built the foundation of the system...
since march, I'm the only person in my group of 4 who has looked at & written any code for it

side note i already had another group project like this that i pulled an all-nighter for and we ended up getting voted #1 in class... but that is nowhere near where this project is expected to be at.

This is an excellent life lesson, I commend your professor!

One thing I recall from projects involving a group is a strong leader is essential. I’ve seen more clusters, that someone else has to fix, from poor leadership than anything else.

To the OP, are you the group leader? If not what have you done? Project leaders can be replaced. Just not at the eleventh hour.

If this craters take it as a lesson learned. Heck, at your age you’ll likely get a participation trophy anyway.

 

there is no designated group leader, but I have been the one most on top of things for this last half of the semester in terms of meeting up and talking. However not much leading to be done when members are non-responsive most of the time.

And you're not wrong. Especially with COVID it seems all of these courses have become participation = pass, not smarts.

However I'm committed to getting as much done in the time I have left and think it'll be ok enough to not crater - and if it does, tell the prof it was literally a 1-man show for the product lmaooo

 

It’s all practice for the real world. Snotty professors, classmates who don’t do shit and get good grades, poor project partners, you getting stuck doing all the work, etc.

this is just the beginning my friend. Trust me.

1 of 3 group members finally pulled the code and looked at it on their own machine

was up till 7am then napped till 10:30 for the presentation at 11... let me tell you

its not all there but it lowkey blows a lot of what other groups did away... just kinda how i am i guess *insert cool meme here*

im so glad i actually know how to code

group members dont show up to screenshare their presentation in class so i have to, and i fumble around with that cause now im sick

and then i give the demonstration with my hoarse voice with the 2 minutes of time left

and maybe if im feeling ballsy i will post screenshots of what we did

yea i made the github 2 months ago and told 3 people to download it and set it up, or call me and i will explain and get them started -- i told them multiple times across multiple weeks and asked them to complete simple tasks like copy & pasting code and renaming it

no one fkn bothers except 1 person the day b4 its due




and guess what... again

i entrusted these 3 to make a presentation that follows the rubric....

...thought i wouldn't need to babysit them for that...

but the presentation they filmed (DAYS BEFORE THE PRODUCT EVEN EXISTED) ...

DOES NOT EVEN FOLLOW THE FRI*KING PRESENTATION RUBRIC, has inaccurate information at the basic level, and is completely exhaustively pointless!

...bro im so fr*cken done... im sorry u cant pretend its cool YOU DIDNT EVEN LOOK AT THE PROJECT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING ON FOR MONTHS-- and then take credit for it - in a f*ickin CAPSTONE CLASS

The thing about group projects is that people know it has to get done and that someone else will complete the project because they have morals and work ethic. They are counting on someone being a push over and 99.99% of the time they are right and someone else will do the work. Throw in a few lame excuses about life issues blah blah and they rationalize their actions (more like inaction) as justifiable.

Modern world is built on the backs of few but credit is claimed by everyone else.

 

I hope you leave you group members a bad review.

if you have evidence they didn’t do anything you can probably get their grade to reflect the work they did.

if you wanna be that guy anyway

I think many policies coming out of colleges & Universities for homework, projects, & missing work are ridiculous.

So lowkey any bridges built in the next 50 years I would be extremely careful around. [*not-so-sarcastic sarcasm*]

 

I totally get it, I’ve lucked out in group projects this far.

Everyones had a day or two that they couldn’t make it to a meeting, but everyone’s pulled their weight.

Im finally getting to the point in my program where there are more group projects than finals, which will be nice I think.

 

I ended up in this boat on my senior project. Managed to get an A out of it, not sure what the other guy got, but we haven't talked since

The older I get, the more convinced I am that these projects are intended to teach how much more there is to a successful project than the raw stuff you get in the book.

 

I finish college this week thank effing god. Same teacher: two ‘group projects’. First group, got the excuses ‘my wifi isnt working’ and ‘my mic doesnt work’ so I ended up doing the project myself (electrical engineering stuff). Teacher decided he wanted to do another ‘group project and presentation’. I emailed him and cc’ed the head of the electrical program at the school saying i’ll drop the class at the 1 yard line before I do another group project and that via zoom theyre absolute dogshit because people participate even less than when it was in person. Got waived to do a 4 page final report.. finished it in a day. Suck it.

Edit: Im 34 with a fill time job as a field tech and dont have time to run an unlicensed daycare. Zero patience for lazy asses.

 

Your experience and in school is what has been driving me to be a project manager and not just another engineer on a project team. Team members will always, always do the bare minimum or even nothing and expect all the credit. It's human nature, unfortunately.

There are a few star players, and when you happen upon them, you've got to hold on to that team so that real work and progress happens, but more often then not, it's just "kick the can down the road," and "do just enough not to get in trouble,"

Being a PM eliminates this since now you're creating the structure and managing these individuals to make sure they actually do their job and reach those project goals.

I'm sorry for your experience, OP, but as others have said above, it's a part of the school/work experience. I would just recommend, with this project, and future projects to CYA (cover your @$$). Create a log and document who has done what and at what time (like PM) so that there is proof of contributions and work. Professors and managing directors love this stuff, so that credit goes to where credit is due.
