Counter back with “yeah there is, and there’s just as much ridiculous demand for Tacoma’s right now and trucks in general. I know it and you know it, so let’s play ball”. Do you have Carvana or Vroom up there? They’re offering stupid money right now.

They are quoting you a wholesale price.

No dealer is going to pay you retail for your trade.

    UPDATE

Went to dealer #2 this morning and we got a deal and they have my deposit. They initially offered $36700 for my trade with $1000 off an TRD ORP 4Runner. Managed to get them to give $37K on trade and we had a deal. That's $2K difference from the last place, suffice it to say I am reasonably happy.

They are looking to secure the black TRD ORP 4Runner as it appears there is only one inbound for a while, if they can't secure it, it will be a 3 month wait or so to get it from Japan.

Ah, forgot about the lease part. He should still get the credit for the difference between the residual and trade in value but yeah, it wouldn’t be as much.

So I should take my $31k trade value for my 2017 Tacoma DC TRD OR w/ 68k miles and a whole bunch of equity and buy a Gladiator Rubicon or Mojave, right???

The dealer is already factoring the tax savings into his offer, even though it is meaningless in terms of the value of your trade. They are notorious in my state for doing the same and quick to mention that "tax savings" as defense for a low-ball trade offer. Car dealers are like casinos, the rules always favor the house.

Find a buyer and ask the dealer if they will do a "courtesy trade"' or a "passthrough." Buyer for your truck does the paperwork at the dealership and they consider it a trade/resale and only charge tax on the difference. Some dealers won't do it though.

I'm in Canada and have sold a number of vehicles privately and it has worked out pretty good. The used market is really good right now and these trucks get premium $$
