Let's say hypothetically if an 4.0 v6 in the 2005 to 2015 engine were to get removed could a 3.5 v6 found in the new tacomas fit inside

I think he's trying to say "why the hell would you want the 3.5 over the 4.0"

The 3.5 is more complicated so it would not just be a bolt in, a replacement 4.0 would be a better and less expensive choice.

There would be so much wiring upgrading to accommodate the new engine it would not even be close to worth it. New computers, new sensors, new wiring harness from donor truck.

    Will it physically fit?

Yeah, it is smaller after all and that said the 2JZ, 2UZ, 3UR, and even the LS family can all fit comfortably in the Tacoma's massive engine bay.

If you have a manual transmission it will even bolt up and the clutch will still work.

But you would need all the ECU stuff and the emissions stuff and probably new fuel stuffs and basically anything electrical not handled by the old trucks BCM, and even still you'ed probably never get the gauges working and would have en eternal CEL.

So as other have said why in the cinnamon toast fuck would you want to put a higher reving lower torque and more complicated motor in your truck?

    Just get a used 4.0

You could probably get one from an early FJ or 4Runner or even Tundra so long as it's single VVT-i and not Dual VVT-i (different heads and extra sensors) it would be plug and play.

What are you hoping to gain through the 3.5 engine?

If you're looking for better fuel economy you will actually get worse as the fuel economy the 3.5 gets over the 4.0 is thanks to the transmission more than anything and even still reall world numbers are typically lower than the 4.0 especially when your truck is modified.

I put an 08 FJ engine 4.0 into my 05 Tundra 4.0. The FJ has a larger 6 qt oil pan and the Tundra only fits with a 5qt Xrunner pan.

Be careful with that. At some point the FJ got the dual VVT-i motor like the 5th gen 4Runners over the single VVT-i motor that the Tacoma only had ever.

A dual VVT-i does make a little more power but due to the head differences and additional sensors etc. It will not work in the Tacoma without an full main harness and computer change.

What people are saying is that the 4.0 is a better engine then the 3.5

The engine I got is completely compatible. It is an single VVT-I 08 4.0 same as in 05-10 4Runner, 05-11 Taco and 05-09 Tundra. The install was successful, I only had to swap the oil pans because 1st gen Tundra chassis only fits the shallow oil pan from the Xrunner.
