Just out of curiosity if the truck is supposed to get stuck in fourth or fifth gear at 4000 RPM going uphill but only 48,000 miles? I have 2.7 it’s 6 speed. Thank you

5th and 6th are overdrives so i wouldn't be surprised if the truck wanted to stay in 4th for hill climbs so it's in the meat of the power band. Does it upshift once the grade levels off or if you're going downhill? If so, i'd think this is normal

It does shift into the next gear but it takes a while in general. seems like It takes a while for my tacoma to go into the higher gear. Also maybe I am overthinking it because I am coming from Mercedes E350 gear shifts to Tacoma

Overthinking it, motor needs the rpms to climb efficiently. Better to rev a little high than bog down low.

When i test drove a tacoma gen3 4 banger it didn't have a lot of power on hills, you have to whip those chipmunks hard to get results.

I mean its only got 159 hp and like 180 torque, truck weighs about 4100# and not aerodynamic at all. I am not surprised at all and would say its perfectly normal in OPs case.

The amount of miles and high RPMs have nothing to with each other. If anything, after a while the drivetrain brakes in, learns your habits and drives better with time. That 2.7 is super de tuned and its a high revving engine, making most of its power at high RPMs. Most toyota engines are like that, I wouldnt worry about it at all. The cool thing is, that 2.7 will last you easily 300k+ miles

    Yes.

Even with the 3.5 i drop it in 4th on some hills and run the engine at about 3k RPMs. 5th and 6th are overdrive, so why lug the engine, let it sing! It was designed that way.

Can you get the Automatic to stay in a particular gear like that?

Yeah. S mode. But it'll downshift. Just not upshift.
