I ordered my AG TDR OR DC SB MT6 with accessories on 05-03-21. Got a call on 05-05-21 that there was a cancel and the truck was allocated to me!! Now I await a build date. Very excited!!!

Update: 5/11/21 I got a call that the build date is scheduled for 6/17/21. Hope to get lucky and have it by July!!

I finally pulled the trigger and went to my local dealer on 5/3/21. Had the printout of the exact build I wanted and had done extensive research on the truck and the allocation process so I was well prepared. I want the '21 Army Green DCSB AT OR with the mid tier ($1200) tech package. And some accessories, but won't be blown if they aren't on the build cause I can get them after.

The salesman and a couple of his higher ups printed out a Cement and tried to sell me on that, saying it'd be in in a couple weeks and with a deposit it'd be mine. I declined, saying I know what I want. Said multiple times I didn't care how long it takes, etc. I think they got the hint after that. Prior to that I was getting told how long it'd take and it could be hard for them to find an allocation or dealer swap for what I want.

So as of now I've put my $500 deposit down and am waiting. Got a call from the salesman on 5/4/21 letting me know he forwarded my build to his boss and that it's his job to search everyday for what I want to make it happen (Not sure how true that is but I'll take it). He reiterated they'll do their best to "get me my green truck" and then thanked me for my time and he'd be in touch. So hopefully I will be regularly updated and not left in the dark. I'll update as I get more information.

It doesn't sound like you are getting an allocation, putting you and the dealer at the mercy of whatever OTHER dealer has the truck you want. Too bad they could not put in a color change on the Cement one. That is what the dealer did for me -- my truck was allocated to my dealer already and scheduled for silver and he got it changed to Barcelona Red Metallic. Then he made it mine with a deposit.

Looking back, I wish I had said something about that but I have no concern of a wait so it didn't cross my mind to do so. To be fair, they talked quite a bit about allocations and then mentioned dealer swaps. I mean really, as long as I get DCSB in Army Green with AT and the technology package I want I'm straight.

I'm very curious to see how much the dealer will communicate with me over these next few weeks though. That'll make or break it for me because I have no problem getting back my deposit and going to another dealer if this one proves to be unhelpful.

The problem is that if your dealer does not have it by allocation, he does not have it at all and another dealer will have buyers for your Army Green DCSB AT and may not want to trade. Therefore you are not waiting on a certainty, but on a hope, a wish and a prayer. If you can put a deposit on a bona fide allocation, you will have certainty — and changing the color on an allocation is possible.

I guess I was very fortunate with my 2021 TRD PRO MT.

I spent a few weeks convincing my wife I needed to get rid of my 2019 diesel ZR2.

When she agreed, I searched for about a week and found the exact truck I wanted in-stock 300 mile away. Had it in my drive way two (2) later.

I spent more time convincing the wife than I did finding and buying the truck.

I can write a book on all the issues I had with my ZR2 Diesel during the two (2) years and 29k miles I owned it.

I won't give you all the details but my first issues stranded me 600 mile from home for almost three weeks. It blew the heater coil with about 12k miles on the odometer. It spent almost four (4) months over the two (2) years I owned it in the shop for warranty work. I traded it in, the day after I had the NOX sensor that I waited for two weeks installed. The dealer that bought it from me had to have the EGR valve replaced under warranty as well. It had constant emission warnings and issues. It was a happy day when I got rid of it and bought the Tacoma.

I loved that ZR2 when it was running correctly, but if I can't trust it, I don't want it. It worked out great they gave me good money for it, I didn't give them a dime and I left paying less monthly than I was paying for the ZR2.

Is the standard process for allocations sitting down with the dealer in front of their computer and them showing me allocations they have coming down the pipeline and then determining if a truck could be mine after putting in a request to change color/packages/etc before it’s built? If so, I didn’t know that.

I left with a $500 deposit put down and my assumption was the dealer would look into allocations and then determine if they could fulfill what I want based off of that and if so, they’d have my $500 so it’d be “sold” as mine. I definitely wasn’t expecting to be told the same day they had an allocation they could fit what I want.

Either way, I’ll be calling the salesperson next week to see if there are any updates.

I "ordered" (really requested) a specific Tacoma through my dealer and placed a $500 refundable deposit. Then they began the search waiting to see their upcoming allocations and calling dealers they typically swap with. They found a match less than a week later and called to confirm it was exactly what I wanted. They gave me the estimated build date and temp vin and that was that. I actually did this at 2 dealerships and just cancelled my ordered from the second dealership and was refunded my deposit.

That’s pretty much how it happened for me. My salesman looked on the computer after I told him what I wanted and told me the only TRD OR DCSB 6MT with premium package that he had coming in was in silver with no Tonneau. He said he would try a color change to Barcelona Red Metallic first, and a day or two later he informed me that it “took.” Then He added the factory Tonneau and when he informed me that it “took” I put down my deposit and 13 weeks later I took delivery, with everything else I wanted that it didn’t already have, added at port. There was never any question that it was coming, and never any question that upon arrival it was mine. The price was worked out through the Costco program of $250 over invoice and when it came in, the Costco deal had dropped to $250 under invoice. It wasn’t a dealer trade. It was my dealer’s allocated vehicle and once I put down a deposit, they could not trade it away.

After waiting almost a full year! I have finally received my Toyota Tacoma. I ordered it in June of 2020 and finally got it may 2021. I had to settle for a double cab over access cab because they were not making any access cabs for the Canadian market anytime soon with a manual transmission.

This is exactly how my process started. I can't speak on any matches yet, but as far as requesting a specific truck and $500 deposit that's where I am right now after 4 days. I hope I get some information next week.

Ah okay. I didn't sit in front of the computer with my salesman. Just put down the $500 deposit after telling him exactly what I wanted and after talking about allocations/dealer swaps. The concrete I mentioned in my initial post was a truck they already had coming in that was built so there was no way I could have requested changes. They said it would be there in a couple weeks and it wasn't sold so they tried to sell it to me. Not what I wanted, so I declined. I'm hoping within the next week or so I get some good news, but we'll see. My process has been different than yours so far which makes me nervous. Nonetheless, I'll continue to provide updates and I appreciate the information you've told me as well as giving me insight to the process you experienced!

I am in the lower mainland Vancouver area. I called a bunch of toyota dealerships 15/04/2021 and put $500 at langley for the barebones tacoma, and then $500 at new west minister for the sport premium, and was going to put $500 down for off-road or sport at richmond if they could deliver within week. In the meantime surrey, downtown and north shore called me back to make a sale. Ended up picking up from new west because sales person was able to respond first and give honest timeline. Picked up on 03/05/2021; seemed reasonable during covid? no choice in color (truck is black), or if I could get OR, but all good!
