Belgian farmer accidentally moves French border

A farmer in Belgium has caused a stir after inadvertently redrawing the country's border with France.

A local history enthusiast was walking in the forest when he noticed the stone marking the boundary between the two countries had moved 2.29m (7.5ft).

The Belgian farmer, apparently annoyed by the stone in his tractor's path, had moved it inside French territory.

Instead of causing international uproar, the incident has been met with smiles on both sides of the border.

"He made Belgium bigger and France smaller, it's not a good idea," David Lavaux, mayor of the Belgian village of Erquelinnes, told French TV channel TF1. That sort of move caused a headache between private landowners, he pointed out, let alone neighbouring states.

The border between France and what is now Belgium stretches 620km (390 miles). It was formally established under the Treaty of Kortrijk, signed in 1820 after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo five years earlier. The stone dates back to 1819, when the border was first marked out.

"I was happy, my town was bigger," the Belgian mayor added with a laugh. "But the mayor of Bousignies-sur-Roc didn't agree."

"We should be able to avoid a new border war," the amused mayor of the neighbouring French village, Aurélie Welonek, told La Voix du Nord.

Local Belgian authorities plan to contact the farmer to ask him to return the stone to its original location. If that does not happen the case could end up at the Belgian foreign ministry, which would have to summon a Franco-Belgian border commission, dormant since 1930.

Mr Lavaux noted that the farmer could also face criminal charges if he failed to comply.

"If he shows good will, he won't have a problem, we will settle this issue amicably," he told Belgian news website Sudinfo.

Left walmart yesterday and there was a guy on the corner begging for money with a sign that said "HOMELESS HERO". All caps with hero in triple width letters. If I wasn't in a rush to get somewhere, I would have stopped and asked what made him a hero.

Or you could just listen to him and then decide. Granted, I don't know any actual heros, that like to advertise they are heros whereas I do encounter wanna bes that do enjoy pushing the limelight onto themselves.

Good thing the new guy wasn't driving, he probably would have frozen up. I bet he had second thoughts of a security career after that day was over with.

That armor and glass can only protect you so much. By the way the van was hit by the other vehicles and a curb (?) I wonder if it was damaged or ended up with a flat.

When I lived south of Orlando I never saw a scorpion, didn't know they existed down here. Now living northwest of Orlando where it's mostly scrub oak and sand I see them all the time.

Hard to tell. Seemed like they hit it and they got stuck. Wish the had a rear camera on it. Either way I don’t think I would have been so quick to jump out.

the driver used to be in a tip of the spear type unit and his training definitely benefited him. Kept the vehicle moving ensuring he didn’t stop in the kill zone, used his heavier vehicle to ram the attackers vehicle while instructing his second to prepare his primary weapon and check on other team members in other vehicles to ensure they are safe and aware of a possible incoming attack. Then, he sets his own ambush for his attackers if they decided to continue to press their attack.

South Africa is the place to be if you are into armed robbery of delivery cars. Always cash, gold, and diamonds being carted back and forth. Because of that, intel is needed which means that nearly all of these attacks have a man on the inside that relays the schedule and manifest to his mates. Company I worked for in Pretoria moved cash and diamonds via helicopter and everyone on board was armed to the teeth.

Once he took the initiative from his attackers he knew he was on equal, if not better grounds. “Kom jy kunt” was his verbal acknowledgment of it. You can do your own Afrikaans to English translations.

At some point you have to take the fight to them. The armor isn't going to hold up forever and you can't shoot back through it. The attackers weren't in armored vehicles.

Plus, the attackers probably wouldn't stick around after hearing the giant clanking sound of the driver's balls when he slid out of the truck while bringing up his own rifle.
