I didn’t read through the entire thread but if you are selling a vehicle, not trading it in, and have a buyer you can do their deal at the dealership. I can only speak for TX but when I sold my Jeep to get my Tacoma my buyer agreed to do his paperwork at my dealership. It saved me from paying taxes on $17k. The dealer charged me around $500 to do it that way but I saved way more in taxes and sold my Jeep for a few thousand more than they would give me on trade. They do this because they still get your buyer in F&I for warranties and whatever they can sell on the backside of a deal.

Question given the current climate of shortage of Tacomas etc, how's everyone doing using this method? Have many been successful lately? I've been doing the old fashion walking in and been told the color I want and option I want is just hard to find and I need to be more flexible......so I'm looking forward to trying this method. I'm in Socal where all these dealerships here have "market adjustments of from $2500-$10k. Which I can not justify.

This thread has got some great info. I'm about to start my search for my first tacoma and believe all this will come in handy. Thank you to all who has contributed here.

    Thanks!

Not so great. Can't get below $33k for an SR5 FWD DCSB Auto

Im looking for a TRD Sport 4x4 with premium package. I really want to try Ops method but given the current climate, I'm not sure if it would be ideal. Been to a few dealers and called many more and found only 2 trucks. That's what concerned me and made me hesitant abut trying this method now. You guys think its worth going to battle now, with such limited supply? we have a 3 week stay at home order which does make me more flexible.

I thought they were giving me usual dealership BS when they were telling me about the shortage. I still can't figure out how on one hand we're hearing about people lining up at food banks but on the other hand there's so many people out there buying new cars. They all tried to upsell me on a TRD, and it looks like there's more of those than what I was asking for. You may have some luck.

Check out the 2021 price thread to get a better idea of the current market / deals people are getting, but yes the shortage and demand is very real right now, just look at the crazy used pricing.

I don’t think it’s so much people lined up to buy new cars as it is that they haven’t produced nearly as many this year as they usually do.

And actually some people are doing well in this climate believe it or not. Housing market also is insane right now. You are either worse because of this or acutally doing fine if not better as the inequality gap widens. But true there has been hickups in supply chain and parts impacting assembly and production all down the chain.

No prob, we do one every year, unfortunately its not a great time to try to find a deal on a Tacoma. In general even in a normal year the most you can expect to manage off MSRP is 10-15% depending on rebates, etc. If you can get close to there I'd say go for it.

If a Tacoma is more of a want at this time than a need, the good news is that it is only December of 2020 and we are talking about 2021's. As production is able to ramp up the supply, there should be plenty of Tacoma's on the horizon. Toyota ultimately hopes to sell as many Tacoma's as they can. Yes, there are many unfortunate people suffering economically due to the ramifications of Covid. On the flip side many people are having banner years at the moment - look at the real estate market and stock market. Unfortunately the chasm between the haves and have-nots is ever widening! Potential buyers will have to remain patient at this time! Like everything - supply & demand!

100% correct way to game the system. I was able to negotiate 20% off msrp on my last truck, a Ram 2500. Toyota dealerships hold a lot closer to msrp.

Hold hard at a realistic price, in my case the dealer called me a month after initially saying no. Takes time and also the willingness to walk away from a deal.

I used this process more or less to get our Subaru Ascent, worked well for that.

This method does NOT work if you cannot get ANY dealer to reply with pricing. Which is what I’m currently experiencing in the entire state of AZ. I emailed every single dealer in the state.

Next step is to try all the surrounding states.

    Looking for one!
Will be buying new in the fall. My 2009 4cyl 5pd is not doing it for me anymore and I needs some more power and doublecab.
If I have a bunch of factory accessories I want, should I include that along with the model and colors I want? Or just the truck, get the price, then ask about the stuff?
I was thinking of emailing all me provinces dealers with the model and list of stuff for the best price all in kinda thing.

    Thanks!

You’re going to want to include the entire list of packages/accessories/color or you won’t get apples to apples quotes. It seems that you’re in Canada but listing specific options and accessory codes can simplify the process for dealers getting you their price. It also lets them know you’ve done research and hopefully they won’t see you as another mark.
