I've driven my 2020 sr5 from the time it had less than a 1/2 mile on it at the dealer to now with nearly 7k miles...yeah for first 1500 miles this transmission kept itself pretty busy trying to figure what gear to stay in, but i never saw the tach jumping past 2500 rpm ever. Right now you can't ask for this truck to perform better. Its gotten even smoother and quieter. Toyota must be doing something right. I was grocery shopping yesterday when i came out to my truck it was like a tacoma rave4 display on a dealers lot. I had four gen3 tacomas lined up next to my truck, and a couple new rave4's in the next row.

Just wanted to say I also have that same insane person in my Transmission. Happens at 35-40 mph and 45-50 mph. Doesn't seem like it know if wants to shift up or down.
2021 Tacoma 2k miles . Going in for service next Thursday. Ill keep you posted.

    First post ever.
2021 Tacoma 4 dr. Has 2k miles on it. Problems with transmission. Seems like it doesnt know if it wants to shift up or down. Happens between 35-40 mph and 45-50 mph.
Also hesitates when first accelerating. Going in for service next Thursday. Ill keep you posted.

My 2020 was mindless for about 1500 miles till it became educated to my driving habits. I'm just a few miles short of 10k, and this truck has been wonderful...its transmission shifts perfect much as my 2001 v8 tundra. If you just use the drive mode and nothing else this transmission seems to learn quicker of your driving habits. Found using the ECT and, S modes confuses it when you go to use the D mode later.

I'm finding the same thing in my 21. Just about 2k in and it feels like it's figuring out how to shift the way I expect

My fix for the transmission shifting is drive in S5 and sometimes use ECT. As for the shaking I took it to the dealer and they confirmed it shook. They replaces all the brakes and rear leaf springs and it still shakes. The truck now has 11k miles.

My 2021 is 3 months old now with 3,000 miles and drives like it should be with no transmission issues but then I don't drive the piss out of it like the younger guys do. Just saying.

    Its called adaptive learning .
The computer controlled transmission is smart and learns the way you prefer the transmission to upshift and downshift .
Give the computer and transmission some time to learn .
If you dont like the way the trans shifts , clear the memory and start over .
Get yourself set up with Techstream and a scanner and you will be good to go

Well Im done begging the dealer for them to fix it. After 2 time to the dealer and being left without a vehicle for 6 days I got tired of it and sold it. I sold it back to a different dealer for what I bought it for over a year ago. So basically had a free truck for a year.

Thank you all for the input.

I drive 2016 4cyl 4x4 AT with nearly 50k miles in Northern CA with plenty of hills. My truck accelerates fine in D and holds 65-70 with 1800 rpm. (Average 22-23 mpg) I find I can hold speed on hills by gradually increasing throttle (never flooring it). It increases to about 3000 rpm and holds steady speed if I go easy on the pedal. Steep hill goes to 4000 rpm plus. Sometimes it delays returning to below 1800 after starting downhill, but it’s a smooth ride for me. I rarely use cruise control, but when I do, no major complaints with trans. I come up the hill to GG Bridge frequently and never need to use ECT or drop gears. 3000 rpm equals 60 mph. When climbing the steep hill going home in SF I use S4 and the only problem is a light clunk when starting uphill after stop sign which is pretty typical for any automatic transmission. I’ve driven this truck for over 5 years and have no complaints. Maybe just lucky, but I really believe the answer is to go easy on the pedal. Or am I missing something?

You sold it instead of getting a tune? Damn bro! For $350 you could have had the KD Max tune installed by your local area installer and been loving your truck right now. Yes the hype is real. Maybe get the Tundra and call it a day I guess

pull your EFI fuse to clear the learned values and then head to the mountains. it doesn't really learn properly in stop and go traffic. but after taking it to the mountains it shifts like a completely different truck.

if you are always barely on the throttle due to traffic it will think you want to drive like that everywhere...which is not ideal.

In my opinion I shouldnt have do to anything to a $40k truck to get it to drive normal. Between the drivability and the driveline vibrations I’ll be getting a 1/2 ton truck. I’m not saying the Tacoma is a bad truck, it’s just not for me. I’m just pumped I was able to sell it for what I bought it for (including fees). And that’s after I had it for a year and put 12k miles on it.
