All viable options :) do whatever makes you and/or significant other feel right about it. If you have the time and tools tho I’d forgo the vinyl on a historic house

Put 60ft of french drain in our backyard over the past couple days. Natural spring was causing a bit of a marsh back there.

Know any woodworking shops locally? Scribe the cedar siding so you get an exact shape you need, then have a piece of cedar CNC'd to be an exact fit for what you need. Hell you could even do what I did and buy a CNC on Amazon for $200 and use Easel online to design exactly what you need rather easily. Then you could use a flush mount gangbox that would fit into your light fixture appropriately with no gaps

I was actually starting to look for local shops that could do that, as long as they don't want $$$. Then started getting excited about trying something new with WW. If I can crank out a decent enough pair of light mounts, i'll try a hand at making scribers for all my windows too.

Im with ya here. Love the rambler!

My wife's aunt/uncle built a house with getting old in mind. Two story, but the only thing upstairs is a bar and reading nook. All living space downstairs. Extra wide doors and heated concrete floors to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers; walk-in shower and tub; handles instead of knobs on all doors; wood/gas fireplace; etc etc.

Add me to the rambler list. I wasn't looking for a rambler but it had everything we wanted. The only things in the basement are a living room only the kids use, 2 bedrooms no one is currently using, a bathroom, mechanical room and theater room.

    A thing or two...
It's amazing what a little yardwork does.

I did a little trimming to clean up the bottom edge of some decorative trees. I pruned all the low hanging branches from the other trees, so I don't have to duck under them when mowing. I went up on the roof and blew off all the pine needles. Finally, I pulled out the chainsaw and cut some tree branches. I cut up and saved the decent sized parts of the branches to use as firewood.

I love that my roof costs $5k to replace, I have 5 windows, siding is minimal.

My maint costs are about as small as it gets. Its really nice.

Add me the rambler lovers list. 1400 sqft with an unfinished basement and a postage stamp size lot is perfect for us.

All other things being equal a rambler is more expensive to build and maintain than a multi level. A 1600 sqft rambler has 1600 sqft of roof and foundation. The same footage in a multi level would only take 800 sqft.
