    Two questions:
    1. Has anyone used permetex sealer when installing a 3rd member instead of the hard to get
Locally thin paper gasket? None of the dealers or locally auto parts store have this gasket?
    2. When laying under the truck, does the 3rd member ring gear go on the drivers side, I believe it will only go in one way?

    thanks,

The paper gasket sucks, use “the right stuff” by permatex. The diff will only install one way, ring gear closer to the drivers side i believe. You can check the bump out on the back of the housing to verify.

I used black ultra permatex . It is oil resistant, and good to 500F temperature. Yeah I figured the 3rd member only goes in one way. Waiting until tomorrow morning to let the sealant cure before adding gear oil.
    Thanks,

as mentioned above permatex "right stuff" nothing better the generic stuff you used will work (may work indefinitely or not) the right stuff 10x better than ulta black.
I just did a trans oil pan on a dodge 3500 yesterday it calls for silicon for the pan gasket, I ran a bead of right stuff, bolted the pan up, filled with trans oil and sent it out the door after checking levels. I dont wait any cure time before filling fluids when using right stuff, never had a leak either

I hope this stuff holds for a long time. A mechanic I know uses this stuff and has not had a problem. This what he recommended.
    thks,

Finally got the 3rd member changed, serviced with gear oil. Took it out for a short ride, and no leaks.
Still getting the same roar I had before swapping out the 3rd member. Roar starts at around 25-35 MPH. Truck is stock, no lift, stock tires. The rear axle bearings seems fine when I removed them the replace the 3rd member. Both front axles and bearings were replace last year, according to the paperwork the previous owner game me. The u-joints are tight, and the drive shaft center support feels tight. There is no vibration that I can feel, and it drives fine. Any ideas on what can be causing this roaring noise, or is this an inherent noise?
    Thanks,
    Jetmech1

Grease the joints. I would also be hesitant on the front wheel bearings. How many miles since they were replaced? what quality were used? Was the hub nut torqued properly? Double check for play in the front bearings, they don’t last very long in these trucks.

Okay, the front axles and bearings only have 2000 miles on them. The previous owner had them done at a garage, not sure what p/n was used or if torqued. will check the u-joints grease. I believe only the front u-joint has a grease zert. How about the drive shaft center support? It feels tight, I have a new one, but haven’t changed it.
    thanks,
