Maybe it depends on what your towing? Imo, anything much over 3k lbs is best done done with a full size. I've towed my 2k lb boat, and change with no issue with my v6 auto tacoma. Tows my 5x10 loaded utility trailer with no problem either. I had a 2001 4.7 tundra that towed both...really not a whole lot of difference.

I’ve heard good things about the KDMax tune. I don’t have any complaints with my stock truck, but it’s still tempting to give it try.

You live in the clouds, you probably are down a significant amount of power compared to most 3rd gen owners. You are down about 12% compared to my elevation for example when you are at home. When you tow to 10k ft, you are down almost 30% compared to me. Surely you can tell the difference towing at 4k ft vs. 10k ft. Elevation is the problem, not HP or torque.

Forced induction is a great solution to altitude. I'm at 7000' here and my Taco will be down about 23% I figure. SC may be tempting at some point.

That’s been my holdup. I’ve actually enjoyed this 2020 so much, I’ve been hesitant to change too much.
