Hey there, I recently moved down from Washington. There's a small tear in my left front CV boot and starting to leak out some of the grease into surrounding area/LCA. Does anyone have good experience with a shop in the south bay? I'd like to replace the boot only and not the whole setup/keep OEM parts.
Any recommendations with this repair? I've heard some dealerships will estimate >1000 for this work.

Apologies, no shop recommendations but just a few things to consider.

A shop will need to remove the CV Axle to replace the boot. Shop hourly rates are running between $100-$225/hr in the Bay Area. A full remanufactured axle is $60-$100 (new cv joints and thermoplastic boots). Its often far more cost effective to replace the entire axle then just throw a boot on the original.

    Good luck OP.

@rpowell25 Thanks for the information. Is a remanufactured axle quality part compared to Toyota's OEM axle? But yes I'd rather be cost effective in fixing this thanks. Do you know estimates in this area for that?

@AntMan408 Unfortunately I don't see any helpful info on axle / CV boot repairs in that link. Mostly install/fab work.

Practically speaking, most of the CV axles are made in the same factory.

You can look around for axles. Napa, Toyota, AutoZone, etc. As far as install goes, the thread you were referred to has names-PM and ask for quotes.

@ian408 is correct. For the most part, they all start off from the same manufacturers so quality will be comparable. I was looking on RockAuto and a fully new (not reman), heavy duty, complete CV axle is $68 vs $67 for a reman. If you buy these parts yourself note that a reman axle may incur a core charge which you pay when buying the part and will get back once you have retuned your old axle; which gets reman'd and sold to someone else. I've not seen many core returns required from online shops but local part stores will likely have this requirement.

Shop prices for parts will be higher...how much will be at the shops discretion. Labor rates will also vary but just know its much easier to replace the entire axle than just the boot so I'd expect a lower overall cost to R&R an axle vs a boot replace.

Thanks for the responses, good to learn and know. I'll check out the RockAuto website and ask around. Thanks!

I had a recommended local technician do a CV boot replacement for a reasonable price over a weekend. Thanks for the messages and information!
