I was thinking maybe MB hired away Red Bull’s wizards. That was sweet strategy. The Mercs had the best race pace but passing is tough. Hamilton chased down the Red Bull on two separate occasions. The 2 stopper gave him what he needed to make the pass.

Eh, Hamilton had the pace the whole race. Looks like Bottas really doesn’t want to be at Mercedes

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
I watched some of the race. Picked it up around lap 20 and watched until Lewis' second pit stop. I recall the commentator saying something about a "28% chance Lewis would catch Max." I laughed and said "more like a 98% chance" before turning it off.

    Looks like I was right..... {yawn}

That was always my dream car as a kid. So exotic and ahead of its time; made even better by the fact that it wasn't legal to import.

And then I read an article a few years ago by a guy who got to drive one recently and he said it felt really dated and even slow (!) compared to the current GT2 Clubsport or GT3 RS or whatever he was comparing it to.

Kind of wish I hadn't read that.... :(

You have to remember that technology has taken leaps and bounds in the 35 years since the 959 came out.

    For reference:
    old - Lamborghini Countach - 374hp
    new - Lamborghini Aventador - 720hp

    old - Porsche 959 - 444hp
    new - Porsche 918 - 887hp
    new - Porsche 911 GT3rs - 520hp

    old Ferrari Testarossa - 385hp
    old Ferrari F40 - 471hp
    new Ferrari LaFerrari - 949hp

My 2015 BMW M3 has 425hp from the factory now.

If we start looking at 0-60, 1/4 mile times, etc. the differences become even more stark.

The 959 has a higher top speed than the new 911 gt3 rs and its only .6 seconds slower to 60 so its still no slouch to todays standards

    No doubt.

A new Toyota Camry or Honda Accord is probably quicker to 60 than the Mustang GTs and Porsche 944s that thrilled me as a kid.

Technology is an amazing thing. I just wonder where it will end. I'm guessing someone will eventually come up with an electric car that will go 0-60 in a fraction of a second. But is that something the average driver will be able to handle?

Fast and quick around a track two very different things. "Back in the day" they could make things fast by modern standards because the ancient formula of adding power and reducing weight to make something fast hasn't changed. It's the technology for improving quickness that has really changed a lot.

Just look at the 'Ring lap times constantly getting smashed, tire tech is helping a lot with that too

Yep. Quicker due to developments in tires, suspension, brakes, transmissions, differentials, hybrid tech, computer control, etc and to some extent aero.

Might have been different if RB had brought Max in right away. They blew a chance at a win.

I might be daft -- never mind, I am daft -- but the truly amazing thing to me is that all of this horsepower being produced of late is meeting pollution and safety standards. And it doesn't even do that bad a job at fuel consumption. Engineering technology truly has tamed that beast.
