Looking to pick up a 3rd Gen today from autonation, which have set prices. Do I have any other negotiating leverage? It's a 2018 4x4. Thanks

Even used right now I would say your negotiation power is limited. Most used Tacomas are gone in less than a week around here.

Find another competing truck at a different dealer (within reasonable driving distance) for less and use it for leverage. There's a little wiggle room but it's all supply and demand right now. Never hurts to ask - worst they can say is no.

You can try. Your odds of success are low.

Worst they can say is "Nah, we will get sticker price for this truck before the end of the week, I don't really care if its you that's signing the papers or the guy in line behind you."

(I actually had a sales guy tell me that line... in 2016. I walked because it was a bit more of a buyers market then.)

You can always try to negotiate as the worst that will happen is they will say no. Never give them a round number. Give them a calculated number such as $36,847.00 etc. This makes them feel this is the maximum you can pay. Never be afraid to walk away from a deal either. The problem these days is demand is high and inventory is low. I got a great deal on mine in June 2020 and I am glad I did not wait. People are paying top dollar for vehicles.

Simply hold any object that has an extremely sharp point while making hand gestures as you speak. You'll get exactly what you want every time. I can't elaborate enough how well this works.

You answered your own question; their prices are set. Your only leverage is not buying there (which I highly recommend).

I looked at a 2nd gen TRD Off Road at a local AutoNation a few years back. 2007 in Speedway Blue, access cab, manual trans. Clean title/CarFax, but there were open recalls, the clutch was wasted, 4LO was inoperative, and there was clearcoat missing from the shell and parts of the truck roof. Paint was gone from the scuff plates. Even at that their price was high-book and set in stone, non-negotiable. I tried to leverage with "You fix the mechanical issues or the cosmetic, your choice. Toyota is literally across the street, sublet this to them and get the recalls addressed too, as that's free. I'm not paying retail KBB with all of this crap wrong." They were adamant about "Here at AutoNation, the vehicles are AS-IS unless you buy a warranty and our prices are non-negotiable. Buy the truck and take it to Toyota yourself."

I walked away from that deal and swore off AutoNation for their bad practices, but some poor bastard did buy that truck from them within the next couple days. I feel bad for whomever bought it.

I had a similar experience buying my wife’s vehicle and then my own used vehicle within the past few years both pre-covid. Used dealers don’t give a flying fuck about any negotiations in my area. You either show up and pay the price or walk and don’t buy. The vehicle I finally settled on for myself I was at least able to get $500 off for the TB/WP service needing to be addressed but I believe they were fine with that since I came to pay in cash.

Beat them at their own game. Waste several hours of their time. They will feel more obligated to sell to you because they are committed. Works 95.5% of the time. Always be ready to walk.

Walk in with the exact amount you wanna pay in CASH and see if they’re willing to watch you walk out with it.

Its only successful if you can apply the grip while keeping a straight face. Better start working those wrists now.

I played the cash-game many years ago back when I needed a mini-van. (kids and such)
Car dude had one for $17,000 I had exactly $15,000 in cash on my person.

I asked what the absolute bottom line was he came back at $16,990. Ten dollars. Almost fell out of my chair.

I plopped down the $15,000 on his desk and waved my thumb through it, wanted him to get a sniff of it.
Told him there's $15,000 right here.
    Stood up and walked.

Dude came running after me and let me have it for the $15,000.

Ended up being the worst P.O.S. I ever owned but it served it's purpose at the time.

Now-a-days going in with cash isn't that good of a strategy - they figure if you got that much 'cash' then you
can come up with more or finance another $5,000-$10,000 and you are at a disadvantage. Plus they don't want
to deal with the paperwork that goes with 'cash-money'... too many bad connotations about 'cash'... which is sad.

I negotiated my 2020 TRDPro down $1k from a dealer in NY about 2 months ago, if that helps. It might vary from region and dealership. Mine was overpriced to begin with, so take that for what it's worth. I think Autonation and virtual dealers don't really haggle and looks like others in this thread confirm that.
