My 2006 Tacoma v-6 starter only lasted a quarter million miles, plus using the car for work I usually start it 10 times a day.
    It was pretty beat up.
I did a little research and saw articles that the exhaust manifold and front driveshaft as well steering shaft needed to be removed. The Toyota service manual was also quoted as needing removal of exhaust and steering shaft.

All that is not necessary, all you need is a 1/2 breaker bar really long 1/2 extension like 18-20” a swivel and a 14mm socket.
The reason for 1/2” breaker bar is the extreme joint angle needs the extra leverage to loosen the starter.

After it’s loose feed it out thru the top teeth first rotating in different positions until you get it out between the manifold and the brake lines. You can force the brake line bracket a bit to get extra clearance.

    Saved hours removing unnecessary components.

    Hope I helps someone.

Thanks for the heads up! Will remember this thread for future removal. My 2004 Matrix original starter lasted 200k. No joke died on me at the 201k mark
