I recently purchased a used 2016 Tacoma TRD 4X4 Off Road that came with only one remote key fob. I'd like to get a spare key. Where is a good place to get a blank key fob besides a dealer? I found a local repair shop that can program it. The dealer price for a fob plus programming is $577 --crazy. $238 for the fob + 187 for the key that's inside (thats 425) plus 152 for programming.

Many times you can buy the fob on eBay and get them programmed by a locksmith locally. The fobs are many times knockoffs, so getting them to work can be spotty. I believe if you have Techstream you can program it yourself.

Maybe I was just lucky but I bought a key fob from ebay and my dealership cut and programmed it for $50.
My truck uses the 'H' type key.
It's been working great for 3 years now.
There are plenty available on ebay or Amazon. Pick one with good reviews/ratings.

I believe OP is referring to one for the push button start system.

I might have to dig into techstream to see if the function is there. I need to get my hands on a couple of spare fobs for the wife's Highlander. She's forever misplacing one of them or my son runs off with them like they're treasure and stashes them somewhere haha. I wonder if you need a PIN number for the BCM like the FCA products I work on every day.

Get like 3 of these. You’ll never lose anything
    https://www.thetileapp.com/en-us/

I have one in my truck, wallet, and on my keychain.

The alert is loud and annoying so you won’t have a hard time finding something if it’s misplaced. There is also a map that shows where the Tile is located if you ever lose your keys outside
