Is there a particular type of cold air intake that works well for dirt roads? Besides a full on snorkel I mean.

Maybe a cone filter with a pre filter that you can wash after use.

I did that type of filter on my Jeep, pre filter not pictured

I used to run a cone filter (K&N) with a Foam outerfilter (Uni) on my off-road cars. No matter how well I maintained the filters dirt always found it's way into the intake, so much so that on one of the cars I'm now running an industrial Donaldson filter from a small tractor. On that car the filters are now contained and away from the elements. Two days of running very dusty trails in Moab last Fall and the new filter stayed nice and clean. Previously with an exposed cone-type filter I was swapping with a cleaned filter every day the car was in the dirt.

For a Taco I think your best bet would be to stick with the stock set-up. It'll keep the filter dry from splashes of water and should allow the filter to stay cleaner longer. Bonus that I've read on this site that the stock Taco air box actually flows a lot more air than our trucks require. Plus if smog checks are a thing where you live you won't have to worry about finding an approved aftermarket intake or hassling with changing it out whenever your inspections are due.

Get a K&N CAI that uses a cone filter then put a filter sock over the filter for added protection

If you do all your "wheelin" in the summer, is the air really that cold in the first place?
