Why would one require/want an exhaust reroute? Add more clearance with a full skid package? Fit oversized tires in the spare space better? I searched, but all the results returned were basically hits on people's build thread saying they had done an exhaust reroute... so not quite helpful.

And throwing skid over top of a pre-reroute just gives you less clearance then eh?

I have always wondered why it’s routed like that stock, any ideas? It’s pretty dumb IMO.

On the other hand, on my 2012 savana it’s bent pretty much the same way and it hangs low. Maybe it’s to warm up the tranny quicker? I’m super curious as to why it’s comes like that stock.

Toyota clearly has a "valid" reason for it. That section of pipe is double wall, with what appears to be some sort of thermal fabric between the layers. I'm guessing the engineers in charge of the transfer case beat the exhaust team on which was more important, clearance, or thermal concerns on the case.

Yeah, it's a shit design for sure. Toyota's always have shitty exhaust routing. Ever behind a camry from like 15 years ago? you can see the exhaust hanging down for some dumb reason. Ridiculous

Interesting. I’m super curious wtf is happening here, I mean Toyota engineers are not dumb, they make one of the most reliable vehicles in the world.

Because the use case where this becomes a problem is so rare that they don’t worry about it. Even though they market it as an off-road vehicle, it’s mostly used by exterminators and yard guys.

Did you, or anyone who did the re-route, insulate the exhaust near the plastic box at the rear of the transmission?
    Thanks,
    Colin

I put a clamp on heat shield by the actuator on my reroute. After a multiple hour drive, I can hold my hand between the exhaust and the actuator w/o issue.

    My take...
You guys are looking at just the center of the vehicle when in reality there are many other things that will drag first.
Even for the few percenters that take it off road, only a few percent of the few percenters will take it where breakover angles matter, and those guys will have already rerouted much more than exhaust.

Here’s a visual on what it looks like without and with a reroute done (RCI skids).

I think it's a good warning system. You're going over something, you hear scraping, stop and check it out. I'd rather that be the exhaust system (which can likely flex out of the way, all the way past the cross member, given the stock rubber mounts) than the transfer case or something more important.
