    Hi all,

Since it seems nearly impossible to buy off the lot now, I had to buy a Tacoma in transit to a city 150 miles away. Although we had the $$ to get an SR5 out TRD Sport, I was kinda hooked on the Barcelona Red. This is to replace my 2018 totaled MGM SR, a color change would be nice. The dealer shows another SR, RWD, with these rims. They say steel, but are def not the standard steel rims. Are there 2 styles? I like these better. But have been reading steel are stronger and after my accident, I think the steel wheels may have been a factor in me walking away. So I want to stick with steel, along with the TPMS thing. So, do these look like steel rims (pic of the unwrecked truck)? Maybe they'd swap. BTW, look how that rim didn't bend at all. A wheel came off a horse trailer (recorded by highway cam), across a grassy median and right into me, tooling along with cruise set at 74mph.

    Thanks!!

    P. S. Toyota Air bags work. 6 bags deployed. My glasses stayed on my face.

The top unwrecked truck looks like trd or alloy rims and the wrecked truck is 200% steel rims.

The wheel material is not likely what caused you to walk away. Steel are "stronger" in that they tend to bend while alloys tend to break. Either way, definitely glad to hear you're ok!

first pic is the SR alloy wheels. The wheel material and/or strength had nothing to do with your safety.

Thanks, the online description must be wrong, since it says they're steel. It's tough when these things are selling before they even hit the lot! I called 4 different dealerships that had trucks online but were already sold even though they hadn't arrived. In 2 different states, both in cities 150 miles from me.

Steel is NOT stronger than alloy. Pound for pound aluminum alloy is much stronger.

Aluminum alloy however cracks and breaks, doesn't really bend. Steel bends. Either way on a wheel your screwed.

Neither type of wheel had anything to do with your accident. You walked away because the accident wasn't that bad at all (damage to truck is pretty minor) and all the safety features, airbags and so on. That's how you walked away.

Ive heard stories of people bending their steel wheel off roading and all they did was get a big hammer and bend the rim back. Can’t do that with alloy.

Exactly. Steel wheels only have an advantage if you bend one. You can beat a steel wheel back to hold air and cannot do that with alloy or aluminum.

Allow wheels are stronger and steel wheels are tougher. Allow can take more load but once they fail, they are done. Steel, will fail sooner but can be straightened out as others have said.

Steel wheels are also much cheaper and can rust over the long run. I used them exclusively on my Jeep for Moab, canyon lands and other rocky places. Mostly because they are cheap lol. But the alloys are lighter and nicer.
