I bought new wheels a while back and like many they have their own lug nuts, a bit thinner than stock requiring an adapter to take them on and off. I gave away the stock basic wheels and tires and all the lug nuts. So, I am getting ready for a trip and I realize, if I get a flat, don't I need the stock lug nuts for the spare that has the stock rim???

    Yes.

To be sure, you should do a trial fit with your spare BEFORE the trip.

No, any lug nut works on steel rims.

The factory lugs are tapered to handle them but are actually not appropriate for steel rims.

    You're good, don't worry.

Narrow will work in a pinch. Try it before you leave. Or order a set that works. You may or may not be stupid, jury is still out!

    Sorry, I disagree.

There are numerous styles of lug nuts. Acorns, bevel, Mag, cone........

If your claim is true, then any nut with a M12-1.5 thread would suffice.

On a steel rim? Yup. Especially a spare.

Technically the camphor on the factor alloy nuts are incorrect and dig in on the steel rims.

Loads of people up here use "tuner" lugs on the steel rims (winters) instead of normal lugs or factory alloy lugs.

You are advocating a basic hex nut with M12-1.5 threads?????

    Thanks, I'll pass.

btw camphor does not equal chamfer

The thin acorn lugnuts work just fine, I use my splined gorilla lugnuts with my stock steel spare to drive 3 hours home. The stock lugnuts are tapered just like aftermarket lugs.

Extended thread lugnuts are not ideal.

Not if you have extended thread nuts like I do. The extended portion will bottom out on the hub before the flare nut portion makes contact with the wheel.

You could call a local tire shop. I think lug nuts are fairly cheap and like those said above it’s a good idea to test fit before you really need it to work

Exactly, even the link to other threads provides more Yes, No, Maybe.... I can find more consistent medical and financial advice online than this! :) As recommended, I will try it out in the real world for my answer. Anyone else, if you buy new wheels, keep at least five of your old lugs and put them in a bag with the jack. Problem solved either way!

    Yeah.
I had a base-level '09 6-lug that came with the steelies on it. I picked up a set of Off Road takeoffs for that truck, but I kept the lug nuts and have kept 6 of them with my jack tools on all subsequent trucks. The are definitely different than the lug nuts for the aluminum wheels.

Did you read the thread? OP sold oem wheel and lugs, now they have tuner lugs on a steel wheel.

OP the oem lugs have a tapered portion to hold the steel spare in an emergency.. Your new lugs probably do not.
I swap to steelies for winter, get yourself 6 new lugs for $2 ea and enjoy not losing a wheel while driving.
