The darker of the two seems to be a stocker. One of his fins is a little nubby. That, or he got it ripped off at some point in his life. The lighter one looked wild.

    It's complicated.
Those are very nice fish. I thought that hatchery fish had their adipose fin clipped, to distinguish them from wild fish. Is that not the case?

I primarily fish catch & release; I buy barbless hooks or I cut-off the barbs on the hooks I use. I play the fish quickly & gently, and then release them by putting slack in the line (they hop off quickly.) I get smarter, the fish get smarter, and they live to fight another day.

Clipping is more of an anadromous species or research thing.

Nah, not necessarily. The easiest way to tell around here is one or both of the front fins are typically nubs from where they’ve been rubbing against the concrete tank for so long like this

Caught a few more this morning. They were going crazy for a black Chubby for about 30 minutes. Then they would come up and nudge it, but wouldn’t hit it.

Hatcheries in Oregon clip the adipose fin because there are restrictions on keeping wild fish. Sounds like it's state dependent.

I think even hatchery dependent here in Ga. It isn’t illegal to keep a wild or native fish here (would be nice), so there’s really no reason to clip them.

WHAT THE HELL IS A CHUBBY??? As far as trout flies go, that is. Never heard of it until this thread. Been fly fishing for 40+ years.

    Thanks, Pops

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
That color combo right there is a rainbow favorite.

We also have no reg against wild fish in PA unless the water is designated as catch and release only. I also see the same nubs on the state stockies here.

Years ago I was fly fishing the Deschutes River with a few buddies; we were getting small nibbles, but basically being skunked... until some old guy came by and gave us a few of his hand-tied chernobyl's. He showed us how he would tie them stream-side, using matching colors & size of the daily hatch; the rest of the day we watched him pull huge trout one after the other. We did almost as well, and learned a lot that day.

The chernobyl made a big difference for us, but in all fairness he was quite the skilled fly fisherman, and could likely have done very well with just a naked hook.

It’s my favorite fly for sure. @98tacoma27 the black/purple is my all time favorite. Black/red does well for me too

It's one of my most productive flies as well. I love fishing it with a dropper too, usually a midge or Walt's worm.
