I actually did a market research project in college when Blockbuster was on its heels about their business. They were attempting to change with the times. They went head to head with Redbox and put of their own kiosks. They had an advantage that they would get releases earlier than Redbox but unfortunately Redbox already had the market. Blockbuster also tried to compete with their by mail service, of which I was a member. They had an advantage there too because you could return the disc that came in the mail directly to a blockbuster store and exchange it for another rental while you were at the store instead of having to wait for the next one to arrive in the mail. It was all too little too late though as we all know what happened to blockbuster...

now Redbox is trying to move to streaming. They have their own app with on demand but the issue is they don’t offer anything unique. They don’t get anything early and their prices aren’t anything special. For instance movies that land on HBO Max (like Kong v Godzilla and Mortal Kombat) eventually find their way to Redbox, but by that time a) most people have already seen it on HBO Max or b) they will use another service like Amazon, Vudu, Fandango, or wherever else they want to rent from instead of adding ANOTHER service/app to the mix...

Control what people read the old way...
    and the new...
Shut down anyone you disagree with...
Redbox appeals to a segment of society that lives paycheck to paycheck and doesn't know if they'll have the $$ on a friday for a movie..I heard an amazing stat (related to Andrew Yang's proposal for a "People's bank of NY"
1 in 10 NYers doesn't have a bank account and spends $600-900 a year just cashing their paycheck...
    Crazy...

The kiosk, sure - but not their new streaming platform.

I think the kiosk will die strictly on technological advances. There’s probably a large % of people that do not own a dvd/Blu-ray player. If it wasn’t for my older Xbox one, I’d fall in that category.

    Likewise.

Local trivia...Our Blockbuster was the same building that was our GameStop. GameStop closed the doors a couple weeks ago.

Is it even worth selling a covered call on amc now?
The way it’s ran the last week, I kind of just want to hold off since it’s only like $70 premium.

No...I also think Redbox streaming...if it's dirt cheap and has a "sort of less premium" pay at will rental...

Almost all the blockbusters in my area became Mattress Warehouses. One of them became some sort of bootcamp gym, but then it failed and became a mattress store too.

    Anyone own mattress stock? :rocket:

TONS of older folks still do Redbox kiosk because rural internet doesn’t allow for streaming.

Yup, try to sell it near a peak. Sell it for a strike that you're happy to leave at.

how? why? has not a single person in their life told them to go get a bank account? or are they too paranoid about being on the grid? Is it just a factor of impovrished/low income communities that bars them, due to stigma or other from walking into a bank or the library and jumping on a computer and opening a checking account?

I hear this from old custy wyoming folk that live in the boonies, "ive never had a bank account in my life, always pay with cash"
-well, youre a fucking idiot, its not 1933 anymore.

I've never used it but from what I have gathered from my vast instagram knowledge - they don't have any sort of 'premium' its pay as you go but their prices are the same as Amazon, vudu, fandango, or higher. They also have some 'free' movies but they are never heard of before titles. The only benefit I see from them is the amount of promo codes they text or e-mail me weekly that would allow me to grab a $.99 rental either at the box or on demand.

That's a good point - but I have seen a lot of complaints from those folks as to how far they have to drive to a box and that they aren't servicing those areas well enough. If you rent from the box you have to commit to driving to it to rent it, and also to return it the next day
