So I've been having this tranny issue - when stopping abruptly, truck bangs into first gear ... almost to the point where the tires squeal. It occasionally won't go past 3rd gear, then when it finally does shift past 3rd, the check engine light comes on until it happens again, then the cycle continues. I have to make an appointment with the dealer but since I don't know when it's going to happen, or how long the check engine light will stay on once it does happen, I can't make an appointment. I've read that it's likely a solenoid issue. Anyone else experience this and, if so, what was the fix? Any advice would be HUGELY appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I'd use an independent shop instead of a dealer. I only use dealers garages to work on stuff under warranty that they are paying for.

Chances are good you have an electrical issue. Ask them to inspect wiring. Not on my Tacoma, but I've had mice chew insulation off wires before on other vehicles that led to weird transmission issues.

I was getting lots of codes and they all indicated a major $2000 transmission rebuild was needed on a Honda Fit we used to have. Thirty minutes after I dropped it off they called back to tell me it was ready. Before pulling the transmission someone noticed the wires. They shrink wrapped the exposed wires, test drove it and charged me 1/2 hour for labor, $50. A dealer would have pulled the transmission without looking and charged me $4000.

Any idea what the codes were?
