Hi guys, I have been a gen 1 owner for the last 15 years, but with it now at 250K, Im ready to go for a gen 2. Im looking for a 2012- 2015 access cab 4x4 manual, and was wondering if these years still had the frame rust issue? TIA for any info!

Any of the trucks that are or were in the salt belt need to be inspected very well.

I don’t care where the truck is from, they all need to be inspected for rust period. While it is true tricks from the rust belt fare worse than southern and southwestern trucks. Keep this in mind when buying used. So the years covered ?? They started having these rust issues in the 1990s and it’s still an issue with new ones. What other car company could keep building shit like this for decades?

2012-15 are less likely, but still very much so have major risk for rust perforation.

Make sure to have it inspected, use a small hammer and tap all suspected areas.

But since you are now an educated buyer, you don't have to worry. You just have to properly inspect and verify.

PS, you're shopping the best 2nd gen years, but I'd make it '13-'15.

thanks for that info. Do you like the 2nd gen better than 3rd gen?
The reason Im going for the later years in 2nd gen is because I can get a manual and still get locking rear diff in an access cab...thoughts?

Yep. Toyota even had a recall for certain 2016-17s regarding frame rust and offering CRC treatment. Surprise there wasn't also a recall for the massive grill.

'Like' is personal taste and fit of needs.

    I have a 5 lug 'cause it's all I need.

For me there is no value in a 3rd gen. And no simple 5 lug any more. And while the tailgate is nice, the grill is horrid. Again, just my opinion.

These are rust holes on my 2012. Of course now that I posed these some one here is going to start laughing at me. All I can think of is recycled steel.
