Upgrade to Entune Premium - Plug and Play/GPS?

I have what I believe is an Entune Plus audio head unit in my 2018 SR5 (See Picture).

I am looking to replace it with an Entune Premium unit. I like the bigger screen, GPS. (I know there are many "better" aftermarket options but I like the stock units just fine for my needs)

I know I will need to modify my bezel or buy the right part.

My main question is that it seems as though it would all be plug and play with 2 issues I'm not sure of.

XM - I have an XM subscription activated on my current stereo, I assume I could just hook my current XM unit up to the upgraded premium unit?

GPS - I have read there is a possibility my truck doesn't have GPS antenna or something else to make the GPS a quick fix plug and play?

Any help/info would be appreciated.

 

I did the same with my 2019 SR5. Everything is just plug-n-play. Just don't get a 2021 Head Unit (they aren't plug-n-play). You will not get any of the EnTune subscription services because they are tied to the original VIN. I purchased the head unit from someone on this forum in the for-sale section for about $300. And purchased the trim piece from an on-line Toyota dealer for about $250. If you purchase the trim piece like I did, they will probably tell you that it doesn't fit your vehicle. They only tell you that because your vehicle didn't come with the bigger head unit. Also, I did struggle getting everything to fit exactly as needed. Your brackets will fit the bigger head unit. But I had to slightly enlarge a couple of the holes on the bracket to get the new head unit to sit and the correct angle.

So was it a worthwhile upgrade for you? Something you’d recommend given the cost?

The main reason I wanted it is for the On-Screen Navigation. I didn't like the way the Navi worked with the standard EnTune like you have now. I also enjoy the bigger touch screen and the way it display's information better. I was a little disappointed that you couldn't register the unit with EnTune+ subscription services. But, we don't maintain the subscriptions on my wifes Rav4 anymore.

If you have the money, I would still recommend the upgrade just for the touch and feel of the Head Unit. There is not really any differance in sound quality. And the GPS works fine. However, I use my phone a lot for music. And I would like to progress more towards using a tablet for navigation and music. I believe that I would enjoy using something like Google Maps a lot more than the traditional automotive GPS systems. And the larger screen on a tablet would be even better than the +. The portability would be nice. But the drawbacks of having another device and mounting could be more cumbersome. And, I just haven't had a need to force myself to learn how to use another GPS system. Just my $0.02. Good luck with your decision.

 

So that goes back to my original question about the gps navigation. I don’t see any gps options on my entune plus unit currently. So would I have them if I made the switch. I’ve read a few things about my truck possibly not having the right gps enabled sharkfin antenna. Do you know anything about that?

If you can do the same? Then your good to go. If you can't? Then you may not have a GPS antenna. But since you mentioned that you have XM Radio, I would suspect that your good?
