    Hello Tacomaworld!

First time posting. I wanted to make a quick review for the OV TUNE 2.0 after 5 days of driving. I currently run 265/75r16 Toyo RT and my truck has standard gearing.

Let’s start with a quick summary of the truck before the tune. My truck is a 2017 Tacoma Off Road TRD and I have Fox 2.0 coilovers with resi and Fox rear struts. I have an aftermarket bumper (Relentless Fabrication Honey Badger). Run a Prinsu rack with 6” awning attached, weatherguard lopro tool box. I run SCS Ray 10 16x8 with Toyo RT 265/75r16. Before the tune I was running into all of the typical complaints that are experienced by running no tune or regear after all of the additional weight has been added to the truck. I was experiencing gear hunting mania on a consistent basis during my daily hwy 40 mile commute to and from work. The throttle response felt considerably delayed. Gear shifting was not smooth with my auto. Gas mileage on my daily commute floats from 12mpg to 14mpg on the best days.

Needless to say as soon as a tuner was in my area I jumped on the opportunity and had the OV Tune 2.0 installed. I had the OV Tune 2.0 -standard gearing/87 octane/33” tune completed. After the tune I experienced considerable improvement with my throttle response. The following day I made a 140 mile hwy trip and I was blown away by the improvement I was experiencing. At first I was assuming it was almost a placebo effect and I was just convincing myself that an improvement had actually occurred. The truth is I feel like the gear hunting has been reduced to nearly none. Throttle feels like I am driving a completely new truck. I am now part of the group who hears someone talk about Tacos gear hunting and throttle response and instantly recommends a tune. I want to note that my MPG doesn’t seem to have improved significantly. I am not sure if for some reason it takes time for the MPG to improve but regardless I am still experiencing about 14-14.6ish MPG at best.

Now to the next part and really one of the main reasons for posting. I decided I want to switch to 285/75r16 Toyo RT. One of the main driving reasons for me wanting to make the switch is that my 265/75r16 look a size too small for my rigs set up. I am loving the way my truck currently drives after the OV Tune 2.0 but I am now fearful that the jump up in size from 265/75r16 to 285/75r16 will cause me to lose the performance gain that I gained from the tune.

Has anyone on here started with a similar set up to me and then jump up to 285/75r16 and still experience the performance gains from the OV Tune 2.0? I’ve decided that I am going to commit to the 285s but am hoping that I keep the same drivability that I am currently experiencing with the Tune and the 265s.

I have read through pages of posts on this site about people switching from 265/75r16 to 285/75r16 and hating it. Describing a loss of power, throttle response being terrible off of a stop, gas mileage much worse than when they ran 265s, etc. I fell into the deep hole of a thread about skinny tires versus wide tires. People recommending getting into 255/85r16 skinnies instead. Then after feeling beaten up about wanting to switch to 285/75r16, I found a decent thread where people seemed to be very happy about their 285s and described them to look and perform just as the truck should, no issues, and of course they look BAD ASS. I guess I am just hoping someone out there on Tacomaworld will check out this post and tell me they run a near exact same set up, with OV Tune 2.0, and they are very happy with the performance and drivability of their Taco, and of course the looks are on point.

In the end I really, really, do not want to do a regear on my rig. With the 265s I currently run, I am so stoked with the way the rig is driving. The tune really has made me feel like I am driving a completely new truck. But, the one thing I can’t get past is that the tires really do look a bit undersized. And for the guys reading this, yes I have compared the 265 to the 285 and I am aware of the small size difference. But hey, bigger is bigger right?

With those 33s, just get the 35in tune flashed. It will keep things where they are, as much as possible. The tire size, esp bumping it up, helps keep the AT under control.

Thanks for the response! That is a bummer, I don’t think I will have access to get it re-tuned with the 35” tune anytime soon. I guess best case scenario now would be to throw the 285/75r16 on and run it and if I’m experiencing a considerable or unbearable loss of performance then make a trip and get the 35” tune done.

    You're welcome!

Yeah. I've reflashed my folks when they do some mods that throw off the tune. I flashed one person with a 37in tire tune to fix the armor that was added. He's on heavy 33s.

Definitely give them a run. I know that the AT and drivability can be corrected if necessary. No prediction on MPGs though.

Thank as for the response. I’m not even concerned with my mpg really as long as it doesn’t dump under 12-13mpg I will be okay because that’s what I was originally used to getting. My main concern was the throttle response and shifting of gears after the jump from 265 to 285. Right now the truck is driving like a dream! I spoke with the guy who did the tune and he is saying that he’s thinking I will be fine to keep the 33in tune after I switch to the 285s. At least now I know if the performance declines after the swap, I can retune to the 35in.

    You're welcome!

That sounds like a good plan.

I haven't heard from my guy on the 37 tune long term, but in the short term he saw an MPG bump. Just hard to promise / guarantee.

Hey im on the same page as you right now! Recently got an OVtune and running 265/75r16 and now wanting to bump up to 33's. Im very interested which route you choose, between 285 and 255 skinnies, as im torn between the 2 and fear getting a regear. Have you already gotten a CMC?

on another note, my MPGs significantly increased after the OVtune going from an average 15-16 to 18-20 with a roof rack and gear mounted. Got about 16-17 when i installed sliders and hauled my harley 300miles with the tailgate down.
Also on another note, im averaging 14-15+ right now with roof rack/sliders without a tonneau, and getting about 18+ when i had a tonneau installed.

I have a Q, Not to barge in on this thread... I have a 2019 Bone stock TRD OR 6MT. Will me switching to 285's cause these driving conditions (sans Gear hunting) for me as well?

Man I don’t even know what it feels like to get 15-16 and even more so 18-20 mpg! After the tune I’ve seen around a .5mpg improvement which is about 14.5ish mpg hwy driving.

No I haven’t gotten a CMC done. I really didn’t want to run the skinnies so I purchased a set of 5 285/75r16 this morning. Install may be on Saturday. If the 285 are miserable in the future I may choose to do the 255 skinnies or maybe even bite the bullet and bend over and do a regear lol
