Passenger side half shaft broke

I think this method should work, assuming OP can wiggle the shaft portion out of there. I think it literally slides out of both cups if you can get the boot cut or separated. The two cups will remain in place for OP to limp home in 2wd. At least in theory.

 

If only it were that easy. The outer joint, on the wheel side, is a damn bear to separate. Even at home with proper tools I couldn’t do it without cutting the axle to pieces.

I've only rebuilt the inboard portion of the halfshafts.

 

I like the idea of cutting the shaft with a grinder just to get home, then you can do a proper axle replacement easier at home rather then out on the trail. Bedside power and harbor freight grinder ftw.

 

Just don’t start a fire cutting shit on the trail

 

Cutting through an inch of hardened steel with not much room to work and fragile components nearby sounds much worse than a trail CV swap.

 

Yeah I wouldn’t cut it on the truck.

All this is likely a moot point though. If OP carries a trail angle grinder, he’d probably be carrying a spare CV as well.

 

I'd highly advise Not use a grinder anywhere along the Cajon pass as the brush is highly combustible there . There's been many brush fires there in the last month

I wish I could help you as I'm probably the closest to your location as I'm up the hill from you in Hesperia but I can't due to health & disability reasons

My suggestion is if it's movable to have another truck tow you down to the trailhead on Kenwood / I -15 then have a tow truck get you home

 

Alright guys, managed to jack the truck up, slide the half shaft back into the inboard CV cup, going to try to limp it back home.

If you can, minimize 4wd usage as you limp away. It’ll minimize stress on it since it’s just spinning, no actual load on it.

 

Yeah, will do. The bearings on the half shaft are toast, so going to be taking it really easy.

 

He doesn't need 4wd for the fire road side. All 2wd friendly.

 

I was thinking the same thing. He either has a internal shock failure it he is running a spacer on top of his OME shocks. Either way that should never happen if neither of those 2 things are present.

 

This is what I would recommend doing. I always bring a spare cv and tools to swap on any trail in case this happens.

Or if you have a cutting tool maybe you could cut the shaft off the axle. Keep both ends attached at the diff and at the wheel though. The axle nut on the wheel side keeps your wheel bearing together, can't run without that. The other end will keep your diff from losing its gear oil

That way though you could drive out in 2wd.

If you have the tools and a new axle however I think a trail swap would be more ideal
