What are trucks that won't start worth and how to fix mine?

Not looking to sell, but it's a 2006 AC OR with 130k miles. Went to turn it on yesterday, turned to on position, electronics good, turned to start, no noise, electronics all still on, and truck did not start. Two tries later, starts like normal.

Today, drove it 2 trips with it normal, then this afternoon, 4 tries with all electronics appearing good, no noise and does not attempt to turn over, then 5th try randomly starts perfect. Thoughts? Bad starter contacts? Starter relay? Fuse working intermittently? Something with the ignition itself?

 

Sounds like a starter relay to me. Exact same symptoms as my Camry..... got a new relay and all is well. My 2 cents.

 

From your symptoms you probably just have a case of burned contacts in the solenoid. A real easy fix for about 40 dollars and and hour of your time.

You can buy the contacts and plunger new from Nations Starter and Alternator for about 30 - 35 bucks. Much cheaper than hundreds for a rebuilt POS from Autozone etc.

OH, And it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. Not a penny more.

 

Checked the relays and swapped it with the horn one, same results, so starter relay seems good to me.

 

Looks like this will probably be what I try. That kit fits a 2nd Gen?

 

Yes I rebuilt my 2012 a couple of years back. No issues since.

 

I'm sure it's worth a lot, especially if you entice the buyer with a tale of how it is a 40 dollar repair... Good luck with the fix! Are you selling it even if you fix it?

 

Just want to chime in with my 2 cents. What the others have said is good advice. Im getting flashbacks (nightmares) of dealing with a past issue just like this on a Jeep XJ. They are notorious for the neutral safety switch/sensor going out. I don’t think this plagues many Tacomas but like I said it sounds familiar. Hopefully you get it sorted by replacing brushes but in case you don’t maybe check the NSS. Good luck.

 

No, wouldn't be selling either way. I've put too much time into the truck and any vehicle I would be replacing it with is going for a premium right now. I appreciate all the advice from everyone, now the only issue is finding a place I can do the repair myself as I live in an apartment complex that forbids car repairs in the community rules.
