Always remember, pin towards the pull. That was beat into my head when I was logging. I have never seen a shackle break. Even from the extreme stress they incur from logging.

Sorry to revive an old thread. Would there be any concern with larger tire clearance with this ARB product? Or, is it tucked in far enough past the steering bumps to prevent larger tires from hitting it? Hard to tell from the pictures.

    I'm using BFG ko2 34 *10.5. Which is about a 33.5" tyre no rubbing.

35's I can't say, never saw the point as I've gone everywhere my friends with them have. But that's an entirely different topic.

Awesome, thanks! Planning on going with 285/75 R16's (basically a 33) so this answer helps!

Nice! Do you have any photos from the side? I was wondering where the side bolts on. Thanks in advance!

Any way to avoid drilling into your frame for the install?

The hole is already there, you just make it slightly bigger. It was very easy to do.

Thank you for your response! I should have been more specific. I wanted to avoid drilling the hole bigger to avoid any future warranty faults in the future. I realize it very well may be silly to some, but I’d hate for something like that to leave me at fault for a claim in the future. I was thinking a smaller, but still high grade bolt. But maybe that’s just a bad idea all together considering it will lose considerable rating.

Hey guys, ARB specifically states that the D-ring portion of the shackle should be in the recovery point and the pin should be on the strap. This is to prevent side loading of the pin. When lifting objects, gravity is acting downward at all times so having the pin horizontal prevents sideloading. When recovering a vehicle, you are not always in a straight line with the vehicle, so to prevent sideloading ARB recommends that the pin be inserted through the strap so the load is always perpendicular and does not allow sideloading of the shackle. The ARB website has further details on this if you'd like to research more.

This is straight from ARB's website....

    RATED FOR ANGLED RECOVERY

ARB recovery points are rated in an angled direction of pull and this has been achieved for angles up to the maximum turn angle of the front wheels of the vehicle. The design features a long slot as it allows the bow of the shackle to be fed through and the strap attached via the pin instead of the bow. This allows the shackle to pivot within the recovery points to avoid side loads on the pin.

I was today years old when I learned that this works with the factory bumper. Thanks.

Just installed one of these yesterday. Torqueing the rear bolt (the one you drill out) was a pain with the clearance, but otherwise it was a straightforward install. The nut stick thing is...an interesting solution to the problem.

I drilled out a hole through the cover on the radiator side where the nut stick goes through. I'm leaving it in place instead of snapping/cutting it off, so having that cover still there should help keep water out of the frame.

It's not the bolt you're drilling for, but the crush tube that goes around it.

But look at that picture closely.
The recovery point is oriented 90 degrees to how it is presented in the taco application.

    Apples and oranges description.

While the taco one is 90deg different in orientation it still doesn't change the force applied or that the curved part of the shackle should be in the recovery point to ensure you don't side load the pin. If you are able to pull perfectly level with the pin then that shouldn't be an issue but if you are pulling up from above a stuck truck, or pulling flat on a nose high/low truck you're going to be side loading the pin.

Here, the card that came with my recovery point. There's enough clearance inside the recovery point for the shackle to orient any damn way it wants for a straight pin pull.

Yes, The results are the same, but you can't use the "angle of pull equal to the steering angle" as justification.

    Apples and oranges.
