TPMS malfunction

What's the current fix for this?
I hear the batteries can die after 10 years.
Just got a warning light but tire pressures are normal. Already tried a reset and drive.

Am thinking of stopping by Costco to see about having it checked with their $1k tpms scan tool. They hold it up to each sensor for a minute and it knows if it's dead (battery) or not, aka in need of replacement.

They say on the back pmv-107j, which Amazon has some kits claiming to fit for $50
has hit or miss reviews though, some people unable to sync them no matter what.
Not sure if that makes it worth it to try and narrow down which sensor is bad to pay dealer part cost for one ($60?)

Any more than that does not seem very in the spirit of Tacoma-like. AKA "I own simple rugged DIY cheap truck and DIY chopping wood in wilderness except tomorrow going to dealership paying man $250 to scratch balls"

 

I just had the wife's 2010 Highlander TPMS Sensors replaced last year. Had one that was dead so I just replaced all 5. as the others were probably well on the way to dead.

 

what year is your truck and those batteries in the TPMS can start dying at 7 years.

 

Batteries can vary. I've seen them die after 6-7 years and the ones on my almost 14 year old Tacoma were still working when I replaced them. I ordered new ones from Amazon at about $20 each. When I had new tires installed in March the tire store installed the new sensors and programed them at no extra cost. Like I said, mine were still working, but after 14 years I knew they didn't have long.

If you buy them and have them installed without buying new tires expect to pay $10-$15 each for a tire store to break down the tire, replace the sensor and remount them. If you're going to need new tires soon I'd just wait and save a little money on instillation. Spending $80 every 10 years isn't a deal killer and worth the trouble.

These fit my truck. You'll just have to plug in the numbers to find what fits yours.

Did you check the pressure in your spare tire?

 

Knowing that the four mounted tires plus the spare has the TPMS, why doesn't Amazon sell packs of 5 rather than only 4, because you can have the 4 brand new TPMS installed but the next day have the spare battery die and have to look at the TPMS light?

 

Because some year Tacomas monitor 5 tires and some, I think most, only 4.

 

Even if that's true, my 2006 has 5 TPMS and I bet the ones I referenced on Amazon being for 2005-15, all have 5 too, so they should sell those by the 5-pack. What's the point of having your TPMS warn you of a flat, only to lower your spare and find it's undrivable because of low air pressure, so seems like only 4 TPMS kind of defeats its purpose for those who have 5 TPMS.

 

FWIW My 2015 Sport has only four TPMS sensors. When I replaced mine, I purchased them by the each (Denso)

 

Buy them individually from elsewhere then? Amazon isn't the only place to buy TPMS sensors. Are you really acting this petulant cause you need 5, and one place out of hundreds/thousands on the internet is selling four packs?

Submit feedback to Amazon, not TW, for the perceived slight you're feeling from Amazon.

 

If being petulant is just asking the question for those who might forget about the spare and only install 4 instead of the 5 required then it's fine with me. I don't know what you have been smoking, because there wasn't a "perceived slight I'm feeling from Amazon"...so relax.

 

Dill sensors can be rebuilt with little kits that sell for about 6 bucks apiece.

 

My factory TPMS batteries died after 11 years. Got them all replaced for about $250, now good for another 10 years most likely.
Keep in mind that the sensor in the spare tire may be a different part than the other 4 due to the design of the wheel. So stupid

What was your light doing? Mine came on on my 08 the other day and never went off. Flashes for a while when I first turn the truck on then stays solid on. All tires have more than adequate psi. It's been doing this since then.

 

Well, The actual purpose of TPMS is to warn you of a sudden loss of air pressure so you can safely stop before you have a blowout and a loss of control at highway speeds. Some added benefits are better fuel economy and reduced tire wear due to under inflation.

my spare tire TPMS looked the same from what I remember, when replacing the service pack to swap the spare steel wheel

honestly the only thing I was worried about was a compatible part that can be programmed, that is hopefully affordable
breaking down a tire to install one is the quick and easy part

breaking down the tire or not, if it is taken off/deseated from the rim to swap in a new TPMS that ends up being crappy and not programmable, then that becomes waste of cost/time

I wonder how the costs break down at different places,
ie at dealership
-parts cost
-number of labor hours
-labor price per hour
might not even be worth asking. It will probably be over $250. Which is a lot to do something as quick simple and easy as busting the bead of a tire to threw a sensor in

replacing the rubber gasket on a TPMS sensor does not bring it back to life if the battery is dead

certain tire shops are required to install/replace these service pack any time new tires are put on, even if the seal still functions fine. Thus they carry them in bulk and have chart guides for make/model vehicle, which service pack kit to use, and what spec to torque the crush washer to via the top hex nut. Which might be 10mm to 8nm or similar.
That is the easy part.

Yes. The spare is fine.
The front left sensor is not working.

Amazon is the only place to buy something if you're looking for the best price.
Either that or being mailed the wrong item or no item in an empty box sometimes.

 

If I remember correctly it was ~ $240.00 for all 5 TPMS Sensors, not at the dealer.

 

I typically grab part numbers from RockAuto or Toyota, and check them on Amazon, ordering from whichever of the 3 will be cheapest. Often for me anyway, the prices from RockAuto beat those prices on Amazon when I check. Sometimes, the bottom line price difference is a wash and it comes down to who can get it to me faster. Every once in a great while Toyota is actually cheapest.

Example: Power Stop KOE4079 brake kit and Cardone 67-7355 CV axle, paid $141/delivered from RockAuto last week. Amazon was $157 for the Power Stop kit alone, another $52 for the axle. Not for a Toyota, but the point is the same; Shop around.
