Some OBD2 Adapter

Took my taco in for its first oil change a few weeks back and went to a different dealer. They unplugged some OBD2 from the the kick panel and left it hanging. Asked the guys there what is that for and they weren’t sure. Had a thick wire going up into the A pillar area.

Any ideas on what it might be?

 

I believe that some of the aftermarket remote starters use those.

 

When it was connected I didn’t have remote start. Still doesnt remote start without it.

Coworker told me that sometimes it’s a tracking device from the dealer but I’m not too sure.

 

Does the truck have an aftermarket gauge, trailer brake controller or a dash cam? Sometimes people with use OBD2 splitters to pull info from the truck but still have useable port so they can pull codes. I'd poke my head under the dash and see where the wiring goes.

 

Nope none of those. Yeah I think I’m gonna have to open some things up. Was just curious if others here had the same thing directly from the dealer.

It looks like an aftermarket add-on of some type. Did you purchased the truck used?

 

It was used but the original owner only put 4k miles so it was almost new when I bought it. Everything was stock on the vehicle or seemed to be when I bought it.

 

This is likely a gps tracker the dealer installed. I had one in my truck and my gf had one in her Volvo as well. I disconnected everything and pulled it out.

 

I installed a remote starter in my truck when it was a baby 2 month old and what I did was plugged the remote starter into the ODBII which had a pigtail ODBII that I put in the mounting spot for the original ODBII.... clearly it goes somewhere and does something ..... follow the wires and find out .... thats the best way to tell.....

 

Id be very shocked if that was from a dealer. A lot can be done to a truck in 4000 miles haha

 

Is the wire going to the fuse tap also connected to it? Photo doesn’t make it look like that’s the case.

I had one on my 17 limited purchased new from a dealer in Tucson. I found the answer here, pulled it out and posted pictures here and it was confirmed to be a tracker
