I think the basic non-JBL unit in my Tacoma is fantastic, although I'm no audiophile. I have the off-road, which has the most sidewall and a slightly softer suspension than the sport, and it's super comfortable. I've also driven a sport and I couldn't tell much difference in ride and handling.

I highly recommend the 6 speed manual, but if you must have an automatic, getting a tune seems to take care of the erratic shifting.

Like others have said, the Tacoma holds it's value so well that it's worth giving it a shot. If you don't like it, you can sell it a year down the road and get 98% of your money back.

Honestly, the biggest reason I went with the Tacoma was the availability of the manual transmission. If it weren't for that, I would've gone with a Silverado or F-150, so depending on your size preference, that might be an option. Not much more money than a Tacoma, but better comfort, and much better engine choices.

A fellow at my work came out and found his Dakota fender flare on the parking lot beside his truck, if fell off due to rust.

Now that I have my taco decked out the way I want, the 4wd actuator is fing up for the second time and I’m out of warranty. If I could do it over, I’d do a Colorado turbo diesel or gladiator turbo diesel

This is my first truck in 25 years - my late father's 1995 Ram Sport reg cab with the 318 - and my only requirement was a manual transmission. Sadly, that leaves all of two choices - the Tacoma and the Gladiator. No way was I going with a Gladiator (for a variety of reasons) so the choice was simple for me.

I briefly, very briefly, considered the new Canyon AT4 but dismissed it after reason some owner issues with the 8 Spd auto that you've experienced along with the typical crappy GM dealer network.

Having said that....if I decide to go with a larger/full size truck in the future, I LOVE the new Sierra AT4; it's the Denali of folks that live outside the city.

No that is a feature of most dodge transmissions. I had a Jeep Liberty CRD they put the same 545rfe transmission behind the 4cylinder turbo diesel as they do in the ram 1500 trucks of similar years. My transmission died on the turnpike A 1/4 mile from the Leigh tunnel. No warning was cruising at 60 mph towing a pop up camper and it lost all gears assending the hill up to the tunnel. Transmission had to be rebuilt at 97,000 miles.
Thats one of the big reasons why I shied away from another jeep or FCA product.

For comfort, the full sized trucks rule, bigger seats, more padding, room to move around....usually quieter. Can't beat the Tacoma for reliability, but some full sized trucks get better fuel economy. To me, as stated above, maybe a car for your purpose might suit you better, I dunno.

The sound system is not very good and the interior will be about twice as noisy on the highway compared to your Colorado.

My 16 is my second Tacoma, following an 06. I have had a work provided vehicle since 2009. If I had to commute in my own vehicle, I would not buy a truck of any type. I nearly bought an Outback instead of my 16, even without having to commute. If I could do it again, I'd get a Tundra. The Taco (and small trucks in general) have huge compromises to fit a pretty odd category of use.

Have no clue what the new chevy's are like. I can tell you a neighbor had a 2015 silverado that they couldn't eliminate the chevy shake....finally traded it in for a ram 1500 last year. I ve been with toyotas since 1977 so thats all i know. This 2020 tacoma was my first....always had sr5 trims that were reliable. Auto trans works fine in my truck...in fact everything is all i can ask for.

Do you even need a truck? A very high % of personal truck owners don't.

If you don't, a long commute and desire for a better than average sound system says shop elsewhere.

I left GM because of a similar issue. Engine that was in my truck was know to have issues. So, I was given a warranty for 100,000 miles and told if it broke down to call a tow truck and take to nearest Chevrolet dealer. So, I spent next 3 years driving a vehicle that could leave us stranded on side of road. While also making payments on it. Sold it at 102,000 miles no engine issues. But, I said never again.

The Tacoma is the very close in size to the full sized trucks of 40 years ago... but, then American's have also, grown in size...

Might be a good time to buy. Toyota is now throwing in a lifetime supply of fluid film on all Tacomas purchased between now and Labor day.

I don't know about you guys, but the internet is the last place I go for life advice, especially from faceless nameless people who may or may not have a clue about anything.
Hmmm, going to spend $40K today, let's see what 17yo Hboygetigetit has to say about it.

    I don't think so Tim.

A local Auto Repair Shop owner I know just bought a 2021 Tacoma. He's one of the the most honest people I know on top of being one of the best mechanics I know.

When the finance guy asked him about extended warranties his reply was. "No thanks, I'm buying a Tacoma not a Silverado"......
